About the role The Specialist Education Practice Development team at Sense College East are seeking an individual with specialist SEND knowledge and experience of delivering educational outcomes, to students with complex educational needs and Disabilities working from pre entry level qualifications to Level 1. They will be confident in sharing knowledge and mentoring members of the teaching staff across the 8 sites both in person and online to enhance the delivery of education in a SEND provision. This post offers the opportunity to work within Sense College East’s growing specialist education practice development team. The successful candidate will work closely with local authorities and careers hubs to ensure that every student receives advice, guidance, and work-based learning relevant to their aspirations. The pathway leader will develop links with commissioners, adult social care, and inclusion teams, enabling our students to become active citizens within their own communities. They will support the transitions team to provide excellent transitions out plans for each student. This is a permanent role working 37.5 hours per week. The role will be a hybrid position, having an office base at college in Peterborough, and will require regular travelling to all Sense College East college sites. Sense College East is an independent specialist college for students with complex Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Students are working from pre entry level up to level 1 on a range of core and vocational subjects in line with individuals EHCP outcomes. College centres are located at: Aldeby (Suffolk), Bedford, Dereham (Norfolk), Hampton (Peterborough), Streatley (Luton), Knapwell (Cambridgeshire), Rothwell (Northants) and Sense Touchbase Pears, Birmingham. The college is part of the Sense national charity that supports children and adults who are deafblind, sensory impaired and have complex communication needs. In February 2023, Sense College East received a ‘Good’ OFSTED grade. Sense College East operates from eight sites located at Aldeby (Suffolk), Bedford, Dereham (Norfolk), Hampton (Peterborough), Streatley (Luton), Knapwell (Cambridgeshire), Rothwell (Northants) and Touchbase Pears, Birmingham. As Education Pathway Leader some key areas of ownership for the successful applicant will include: Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive culture that embeds the College’s values and beliefs, and ensures that students and staff feel valued, safe and supported Be a role model for outstanding professional skills and practices Provide professional specialist support and direction to the College Education team. Mentor and support new and trainee tutors To be involved in monitoring the effectiveness curriculum implementation through observations of practice and reviews of programmes Undertake improvement activities in line with the Quality Improvement Plan (QIP), to ensure on-going improvement in the student experience, and student progress and outcomes Ensure the effective use of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs). Work with staff who contribute towards students’ programmes to ensure appropriate targets are established and progress is recorded accurately and frequently, by staff and students Key skills and experience required: Relevant degree or higher level qualification Level 5 or above teaching qualification Training in various forms of specialist communication At least 2 years’ experience of working with students with a learning disability and sensory loss Relevant teaching experience in a specialist educational setting Experience of carrying out assessments for learning for students with sensory loss and complex communication needs Sound understanding of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework An understanding of the issues facing people transitioning to adulthood and ability to relate learning to wellbeing A working knowledge of specialist communication techniques in verbal and non-verbal communication Experienced in staff management including supervision and staff development, identifying strengths and areas of improvement in overall performance About Sense For everyone living with complex disabilities.
