Interim Privacy Legal Counsel – AI and Data Modernisation
Location: London - Hybrid: 2 days in office, 3 remote (potential for flexibility on this)
Contract Length: 12 months
About the Role
Our client, a leading technology and data-driven organisation, is expanding their Privacy Legal Team and seeking a Legal Counsel – AI and Data Modernisation to join their London team for a period of 12 months.
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of AI, data modernisation, and privacy law. The successful candidate will play a key role in assessing, implementing, and advising on data protection requirements related to AI governance, data retention, tokenisation, and other privacy controls.
The role sits within a team of dedicated privacy lawyers and compliance analysts, working closely with product, engineering, risk, and security teams to develop and implement privacy-enhancing features and legal frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess data protection requirements for AI products, AI governance, and data modernisation (e.g., minimisation, retention, tokenisation).
* Translate legal requirements into privacy-enhancing product features aligned with internal risk frameworks.
* Collaborate with product, engineering, and security teams to develop and implement technical privacy controls.
* Lead privacy documentation efforts, including Legitimate Interest Assessments (LIAs) and Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).
* Drive Privacy by Design implementation alongside the DPO and key stakeholders.
* Manage external legal counsel for expert advice on privacy, data modernisation, and technology law.
* Work closely with internal privacy and legal teams to address broader data regulatory topics.
What Our Client is Looking For
* Qualified lawyer (LLB/JD) admitted to practice in at least one EEA/UK jurisdiction (CIP/E, CIPT, AIGP certifications are a plus).
* Five or more years of experience in a top-tier law firm or major tech/data-driven company specialising in privacy, data protection, and technology law.
* Strong expertise in GDPR, the e-Privacy Directive, and familiarity with the EU Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, and AI Act.
* Hands-on experience with data retention and deletion programs, DPIAs, LIAs, and Privacy by Design strategies.
* Ability to translate complex legal requirements into risk assessments and technical solutions.
* Excellent project management and communication skills.
* Experience leading teams is a plus.
