Job overview
We have a vacancy for a school health support worker (Band 3) to come and join us to support the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme (HCP) and delivery of immunisations within the Liverpool 5-19 Service. Our 5-19 teams offer health and wellbeing advice, information and support which encompasses children's physical and emotional health. Your role will be varied across the children’s 5-19 service and will include the delivery of the childhood measurement programme - NCMP, as well as the HCP and supporting the immunisation team.
Main duties of the job
The Children's service provides support to children, young people and their families within a progressive universal model of service delivery dependent on assessed need. The service offers every child/family a programme of screening, immunisations, developmental reviews and information and guidance to support parenting and healthy choices as defined by The Healthy Child Programme (Department of Health, 2008).
The post holder will work as part of a School Health Team to promote and maintain the health and wellbeing of children and young people within a defined school population. Following appropriate training and assessment, assist the school nursing teams in the organisation and implementation of health screening and immunisation sessions.
The post holder will undertake duties that ensure the smooth running which underpin the service delivery from the School Nursing Teams. This includes the organisation and management of resources (equipment and stock) and providing appropriate clinical administrative support in base and at other locations as service needs dictate.
Ensure the delivery of the quality strategy within the designated area incorporating establishment of systems and processes.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Be responsible for the management and prioritisation of clinical administration generated within own workload.
2. Respond to changing situations and prioritise work accordingly within own workload.
3. Maintain school health records within own workload as per MCFT Record Keeping Policy.
4. Mentor new team members and support students and other staff (at equivalent or lower band).
5. Following appropriate training and assessment undertake health screening in schools or other settings as directed by the Caseload Holder/Team Leader. Updating the Caseload Holder on progress and report any problems or concerns.
6. Support the school nursing team in the delivery of immunisation sessions and at New Entrant interviews.
7. Participate as part of the team in Public Health work/ health promotion activities in schools and other settings.
8. Maintain all school health records within workload as per Mersey Care (MCFT) Record Keeping Policy.
9. Co-ordinate all relevant documentation in respect of school health immunisation programmes including consent forms and re-call letter to absentees.
10. Attend and provide effective support at immunisation sessions in schools, ensuring each child has a correct consent form and as directed by the Lead clinician.
11. Upload appropriate data onto systems as required e.g., NCMP.
12. Be responsible for the ordering of equipment and resources and arrange for the repair and maintenance of any equipment for the school health team.
13. Be responsible for the care and safe keeping of equipment issued for personal and team use and to report any defect or loss.
14. Attend staff meetings and Continuous Professional Development Reviews.
15. Access appropriate training as identified within Continuous Professional Development Reviews.
16. Following appropriate training, have an awareness of MCFT Child Protection Policy and work within guidelines.
17. Attend all mandatory training as per MCFT requirement.
18. Ensure quality standards as per MCFT Record Keeping Policy in respect of record management and storage within own workload.
19. Adhere to MCFT policies and procedures maintaining strict confidentiality.
20. Contribute to the development and review of new administrative/IT systems within MCFT School Health Service.
21. Participate in recording and processing of school health statistics, e.g., NCMP to facilitate audit and evaluation.
22. Contribute to the collection and maintenance of evidence for Care Quality Commission (CQC) outcomes.
23. Communicate with school staff and children to obtain up to date demographic details in respect of children and young people within own workload.
24. Communicate with children and young people within the framework of Brief Intervention on the Public Health Agenda as per MCFT guidance.
25. Report any incidents of verbal, physical or threat of physical abuse to line manager.
26. Act at all times as a polite and courteous representative of MCFT.
27. Attend and take an active role in school health team meetings promoting effective liaison with school nurse colleagues.
