About the Role:
To contribute to the success of the Volution UK Group Technical Team as a Design Engineer by developing innovative and effective product design solutions, from initial concept through to production.
The role involves generating detailed CAD models using Autodesk Inventor, creating and managing 2D engineering drawings, and applying analysis techniques such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
Reporting to the Technical Managers, the Design Engineer will also support various engineering and project-related activities to ensure the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective, and compliant products.
Key areas of responsibility:
* To develop – from concept to implementation - inventive, innovative, manageable and cost-effective solutions to product development briefs.
* To design ventilation equipment i.e. fans and heat recovery products, through the creation of 3D CAD models using Autodesk Inventor.
* To design plastic injection moulded parts, some with complex curved shapes, and to design sheet metal components using the Inventor sheet metal environment.
* Build parts into assemblies, some complex, comprising of hundreds of components and many subassemblies.
* Design of other components for the assemblies using a wide range of engineering materials, forming techniques and fastening methods, including EPS, EPP, vacuum formed plastic, insulation foam, and the design of air-tight seals.
* To model cable runs in assemblies using the Inventor cable and harness environment.
* To create 2D part and assembly drawings to BS8888 based on the 3D designs.
* Monitor output to ensure quality of design within a project team.
* To create and work with additional data and documentation as required, including use of an MRP database and Task/Time management systems.
* To assess suppliers drawings and models of proposed injection mould tooling with regard to its suitability for production.
* To carry out FEA and CFD analysis and manage any sub-contracted work.
* To possess the practical skills required when creating prototypes for concept validation and development testing.
* To deliver projects within time, cost and performance expectations. To plan, monitor and control workload and progress.
* To become a key member in the New Product Development environment.
Skills, Knowledge & Personal Qualities
* Minimum 5 years CAD experience with Autodesk Inventor or similar software
* Qualified to HND level or higher in a relevant discipline.
* Experience in designing fluid handling machinery would be beneficial.
* Experience of designing domestic or commercial appliances, including both plastic and sheet metal components.
* Experience of FEA and CFD software, would be beneficial.
* Experienced in Drawing Management processes and Data Management systems.
* Experience in a product development role, designing for large batch and flow manufacture.
* Familiar with UKCA / CE Approvals process at an overview level.
* To travel to customers and suppliers as required, including internationally on occasion.
* Ability to take the initiative and do what it takes to achieve goals, continually looking for improvements with the ambition to operate more effectively.
