Are you a Mechanical Engineer, with a background in analysis and design of piping systems and pressure equipment, who thrives on difficult problems? Are you good at leading and developing others while managing multiple projects and tasks to meet changing demands and find the best solution for your needs? If so, you might enjoy solving the energy industry's most important pressure equipment design conundrums across a variety of clients. You could be designing systems to provide cooling for safety critical plant, to provide emergency shutdown capability to nuclear reactors, to qualify pipework for the high temperatures and pressures required for fusion reactors, to support the UK Submarine and SMR programmes, or to enable one of many renewable energy projects across a growing carbon net zero portfolio. You're likely to be juggling several projects simultaneously, so enjoying being adaptable is a must! The constant in this role is the complex nature of the jobs and the chance to provide innovative solutions to a range of problems for several appreciative clients.
You'll enjoy working with clients, colleagues and various stakeholders, simplifying concepts so that you bring clarity in ambiguous situations. You'll be a good communicator, proactive in liaising with clients to identify their needs and new opportunities for you and your team to support. You'll take ownership for the delivery of your work and your team and will be dependable, delivering on your commitments. You'll be a natural reviewing and producing high quality technical documentation while meeting delivery and cost requirements. You'll enjoy mentoring and coaching others to help them develop, solve problems and make decisions.
The role can be delivered following a hybrid working arrangement between one of our nuclear offices, client offices or sites and from your home. Every project is different, so this will vary depending on your client's, your project team's and your needs, but two days of office/site presence will be expected as a minimum.
About your team:
The focus of our Nuclear & Power business is our people and through them building and developing new long-term relationships with clients in the sector, of which we hold a number of long-term framework contracts through which we deliver our clients work.
You'll be part of a truly diverse Pressure Equipment Design team; we pride ourselves on coming from a wide range of countries with wide-ranging educational backgrounds. You will enjoy access to the industry's most significant players and you'll have a varied work diet.
What you'll be doing?
The role will entail leading projects to deliver piping solutions for the construction of new nuclear stations and systems at fusion research facilities, support the operation of the existing nuclear generating fleet and decommission nuclear sites. Day-to-day activities may include the following:
1. Production of clear and concise technical reports and drawings.
2. Develop capability through mentoring and coaching.
3. Review and verification of technical documentation produced by others.
4. Production of Safety Case documentation.
5. Technical Leadership of piping teams on large projects or multi-discipline teams on simple projects.
6. Delivery of technical solutions to complex problems.
7. Regular communication with clients and stakeholders, building and nurturing strong relationships with them.
8. Production of bids and proposals.
9. You will take responsibility for the delivery of your work and your team. You will work closely with clients and stakeholders both remotely and from their premises.
What you can bring?
In addition to having excellent communication and problem-solving skills, you will also be able to demonstrate the following:
1. Relevant qualifications in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
2. Senior technical practitioner able to demonstrate good engineering judgement and with extensive experience in using fundamental engineering skills while leading and developing others.
3. Extensive experience in piping and pressure vessel design and stress analysis.
4. Experience delivering projects for UK nuclear licensees.
Desirable Experience:
1. Experience in safety critical piping design.
2. Chartered with a relevant professional institute (or approaching application for registration).
3. Experience in working with design codes such as ASME BPVC Section III, RCC-M, BS EN 13480, BS EN 13445.
4. Experienced in PESR and PSSR compliance.
5. An understanding of commercial and client management principles.
6. Sound commercial acumen.
7. Chartered status with a relevant professional institution.
8. Proven record of delivering technically challenging projects.
