Chief Officer - Legal and Governance
Location: Rugby CV21 2RR West Midlands
Salary: up to £78,011 (including Monitoring Officer Allowance of £5,978)
Permanent Full-time: 37 hours per week
We are working in partnership with a forward-thinking Local Authority client to recruit a highly capable and ambitious Chief Officer - Legal and Governance. This is a senior leadership role for an experienced legal and governance professional who is ready to make a real strategic impact. You'll be the organisation's key legal advisor and Monitoring Officer, with leadership responsibility for Legal Services, Democratic Services, Elections, Business Support, and Equality & Diversity.
The Opportunity
As Chief Officer - Legal and Governance, you will:
1. Provide strategic legal and constitutional advice at the highest level
2. Act as Monitoring Officer, ensuring lawful decision-making and ethical standards
3. Lead and modernise key corporate service areas
4. Champion equality, diversity, and strong governance across all operations
5. Support the senior leadership team in delivering a thriving and inclusive borough

About You
We're looking for someone who brings:
1. Qualified Solicitor or Barrister status with a valid practising certificate
2. Significant experience in local government legal services and governance
3. A track record of leading complex service areas through change and transformation
4. Strong knowledge of the legislative framework for local authorities
5. Excellent stakeholder management and leadership skills
