This role is potentially hybrid, but as it is a developmental role, we encourage all our Graduates to be onsite as often as possible, especially during the first few months.
The salary for this role is £32,729.
This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

The Role
Technical Plant Maintenance Group (TPMG) has an opportunity for a Graduate Engineer to work as part of their Engineering Team, specializing in Regulatory Compliance. TPMG provides specialist technical supervision and guidance in all aspects of Operational Plant across multiple UKAEA projects including JET Decommissioning, MAST-U, H3AT, STEP, CHIMERA etc. The services TPMG provides include delivery of a comprehensive planned preventative maintenance program, solutions, and responsive delivery of corrective actions to minimize plant downtime and guidance to ensure technical plant is operated and maintained in compliance with all appropriate regulatory requirements. The graduate position would specialize in the regulatory aspect of TPMG’s services provided.
This opportunity is primarily office-based but with regular opportunities to go out on site to inspect or assess equipment or planned operations. The role requires exceptional attention to detail and diligence when checking and filing paperwork, much of which will be legal documents. The role has similarities to engineering quality control, audit, and asset management type roles.
Accountabilities:
Primarily office-based duties
* Through attending short courses, self-study, and working with the Senior Authorised Persons for Lifting and Pressure, throughout the graduate program, develop a detailed knowledge of the LOLER, PSSR 2000, and PUWER and associated legislation like SOMSR and how they are enforced and complied with in industry.
* Become competent in using UKAEA’s CMMS software to track due dates for equipment maintenance/statutory inspections and to store maintenance and inspection reports, fully understanding the legal significance of these records.
* Assist with the development of internal procedural documentation, guidance notes, and standard forms.
* Learn how to advise and support Asset Managers with their statutory duties to ensure compliance with LOLER, PSSR, and PUWER including advising on Asset Management as it relates to regulatory compliance.
* Learn how to manage small public sector contracts for the provision of third-party inspection and maintenance services.
Duties with an operational on-site element
* Occasional opportunities to accompany the UKAEA SAP-L and SAP-P as Technical Interface in the design, testing, and commissioning of pressure and lifting equipment on UKAEA sites and potentially on overseas projects.
* PSSR - Learn about all aspects of inspecting industrial and scientific pressure equipment inspection including how to create a written safe system of work, putting in place mechanical isolations to make equipment safe to inspect and supervising third-party inspectors and contractors while they work. The role will also involve learning how to carry out visual and ultrasonic surveys of pressure equipment.
* LOLER - Learn the key principles of a lift plan review, alongside the SAP-L, review lift plans submitted by external contractors. Ensure a safe system of work is established and the training and competencies of lifting teams are current and that both contractor and clients are legally compliant. Help to coordinate these operations with project managers, site supervisors, and other stakeholders whilst ensuring LOLER compliance.
Additional Responsibilities:
* Engineers may be required from time to time to enter radioactive controlled areas to support the diagnosis and execution of corrective action on JET equipment. Appropriate PPE and training will be provided in advance.
* Engineers may be required to travel and work offsite in support of UKAEA project responsibilities and may be temporarily co-located with our business partners.
* Engineers may be required to work at height.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Degree in engineering ideally with a mechanical, process, or civil engineering bias.
* A good knowledge of Microsoft Excel including writing formulae, conditional formatting, pivot tables, and other advanced features.
* A basic knowledge of VBA or other software for data analysis such as PowerBi.
* A basic understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and familiarity with the scope of associated legislation and codes.
