We are seeking someone with experience working with people with disabilities to join our team as a Disabled Facilities Grants officer. With an annual spend of £2m-£3m, Thanet District Council’s Disabled Facilities Grants’ Team administers government grants (or DFGs) that help people with disabilities who qualify for them, making their homes accessible and more suitable for their needs. We need someone who can manage overseeing projects that help people to live independently for longer, that aid hospital discharge and that prevent hoarding. As well as helping the Council meet its legal obligation, you’ll be joining a team on top of its game. You will have a: Good working knowledge of domestic building construction, including an appreciation of the vital roles of Building Control, Planning and Conservation. Knowledge of designing for the disabled Working knowledge of the law and guidance on DFGs (and grants generally) Good understanding of the welfare benefits system generally and the operation of the means-testing rules in particular Strong ability to assess properties using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) to identify category one hazards Strong ability to write concise, factual reports for consideration by others (e.g. requests for waiver of grant repayments) Driving licence and a car to get out to site visits in remote parts of the district from time to time to meet customers and check on building works You’ll also be used to working in a busy office environment, preferably housing-based, making decisions and presenting complex cases to senior officers for decisions with your recommendation. Your strong customer service skills will also mean you are confident in responding to customers by email, on the phone or in person and you will be able to resolve difficult conversations when they occasionally arise.
