Could you be the natural leader that we are looking for to lead the RSPB’s Norfolk Broads nature reserves team? As the RSPB Norfolk Broads Senior Sites Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership of a dedicated team of 12 staff and 100 volunteers looking after nearly 2000 hectares of estuary, Broads, wet grassland, woodland, fen and reedbed. The reserves are home to complex ecosystems and an amazing array of wildlife including some of our most iconic and threatened species such as Swallowtail Butterfly, Fen Raft Spider, Fen Orchid, Crane, Bittern, and some of the best surviving populations of breeding wading birds in lowland England. The reserves also host over 25,000 human visitors a year.You will oversee a work programme and budget to deliver three management plans and a welcoming visitor operation at Strumpshaw Fen. To do this you will need to be able to think strategically about how to best allocate your resources to achieve agreed objectives. You will have the ability to act as the bridge between the local team and HQ support teams, and to work with a wide range of stakeholders and contractors involved in smooth running of our reserves’ operation.You will be responsible for the Broads land management and visitor operations teams, and work alongside colleagues from a wide range of disciplines including Ecology, Land Agency, Finance, Project Management, Fundraising, Conservation and Communications. You won’t be an expert in all these areas, but you will have an enquiring mind and be willing to learn from those around you whilst knowing when to make a decision to move things on.You will need to be an advocate and ambassador for the RSPB; working with neighbours, other users of the Broads, local councils and colleagues from agencies as varied as the Water Management Alliance, the Broads Authority, and Natural England.We are looking for someone who can; look ahead and plan for the development of reserves in the face of a changing climate and agricultural landscape, develop projects and partnerships to take our reserves forwards, and to lead and direct a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. To do this it would be an advantage if you have existing knowledge of the ecology and land management of the Broads but more important is a desire to listen, learn, adapt, and lead by example.“We will assess your application based on the essential and desirable criteria for this role. Financial & budget management A) Experience in developing and managing large budgets to ensure financial compliance. B) Ability to secure external funding and ensure compliance with grant requirements. Ecological & environmental knowledge A) Understanding of ecological requirements for key species and habitats. B) Knowledge of land management principles and conservation best practices. Stakeholder engagement & communication A) Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. B) Experience in community engagement and representing an organisation to local communities. C) Ability to influence and negotiate effectively with key partners and stakeholders. D) Problem solving & decision making Advocacy & Organisational Representation Ability to act as an advocate for the organisation’s mission, engaging effectively with stakeholders.
