The Design and Technical sector of the Group, MMD Design & Consultancy Ltd, would like to recruit a Mechanical Engineer to join our busy Technical Department.
Job Description
The successful candidate will perform product development, produce outline design, and provide and direct manufacturing details covering all MMD mechanical equipment. The Mechanical Engineer will ensure the required high levels of technical and engineering standards are adhered to. The position is based at the MMD Groups Technical & Design office in Derbyshire, UK, and forms part of our established Technical Department. The role includes a particular focus on ensuring MMD’s compliance with the various machinery and equipment legislations, lifting requirements etc. The Engineer will be involved in the design and specification aspects of MMD’s full range of equipment.
The ideal candidate will have experience in rotating equipment design and will have good general knowledge in the areas of power transmission, industrial gearing, rolling element bearings and lubrication. Experience relating to crushing technology, knowledge of rocks and minerals, engineering metals, heat treatments and manufacturing processes would all be an advantage.
The successful candidate will be able to produce accurate calculations to support design decisions and study reports.
The role will have key participation in large engineering projects, both in physical size and commercially. An important part will be to provide technical support to our global sales offices and manufacturing facilities. Due to the nature of the industry, problem solving is a key element of the role as and when necessary, this is usually required urgently and is necessary to maintain customer relations. A good work ethic and a positive attitude are expected, as well as an aptitude for working on innovative new products.
General Duties
1. Mechanical design of MMD equipment including Sizers, Feeders, Semi-Mobile Equipment, and Fully Mobile Equipment.
2. Compile strength and loading calculations using engineering hand calculations as well as MathCAD and Microsoft Excel software to validate conceptual designs.
3. Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) when required.
4. Creation of 3D models and design layout drawings using SolidWorks and 2D software.
5. Preparation of detail drawings for new designs, when required.
6. Creating MMD technical specifications and procedural documents to be used by MMD internally, externally, and customers.
7. Provide practical input to the MMD design process based on site experiences in areas such as ergonomics, safety, maintainability, scheduling etc.
8. Co-ordination with third party suppliers and customers regarding the supply of specific equipment to customer’s sites.
9. Provide technical assistance to the MMD UK manuals department to facilitate the editing and updating of the MMD spare parts and maintenance manuals.
10. Carry out risk assessments and design reviews of MMD equipment to ensure that the designs comply with the most current legislation, with particular emphasis on the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
11. Provide technical support and liaise with personnel from MMD companies overseas and customers.
12. Compile lifting studies for any abnormal lifting conditions as and when required.
13. Create and present technical results and formal reports in a clear and concise manner.
Requirements
1. To be Degree qualified in a relevant area of Mechanical Engineering, and preferably to be a registered Chartered Professional Engineer.
2. Experience of heavy engineering and preferably knowledge of MMD’s product range and equipment.
3. Ideally have knowledge of the following software: SolidWorks, Advance Steel, ANSYS Mechanical, ACAD and the Microsoft Office Suite.
4. Have good interpersonal skills, take pride in their work, and have an eye for detail. They must also be able to manage their own workload and over time would be expected to work independently with minimal supervision.
5. The ability to successfully multitask and meet restrictive deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of work.
6. Willingness to partake in occasional short overseas travel.
