About the role
The Energy Manager will play a key role in shaping and implementing the University’s energy strategy and roadmap to net zero carbon, working closely with the Head of Compliance and Sustainability as part of the Compliance and Sustainability team. Covering all campuses and buildings, the role is integral to improving energy performance across the institution and fostering sustainability within the wider community.
A key responsibility of the post holder will be to provide high-quality information that supports utility management and the University's decarbonisation efforts. This includes ensuring the institution retains its ISO14001 accreditation and continuously works to reduce its carbon footprint while enhancing energy efficiency.
The Energy Manager will be responsible for managing the energy performance of all university buildings, which includes collecting, analysing, and auditing data to enable accurate and effective reporting. They will collaborate closely with the maintenance team to optimise the Building Management System (BMS) and provide critical information to the Projects team to support new developments, including soft landings—ensuring energy-efficient operations post-construction.

About You
The ideal candidate will possess a relevant degree or equivalent qualification. You will have demonstrable experience working in Energy Management within large estates or organisations with a significant property portfolio, showcasing your ability to handle the complexities of large-scale energy operations.
A key responsibility will be the management of significant revenue budgets, ensuring that financial resources are allocated effectively to support the organisation's energy and sustainability goals. Additionally, you will have experience in managing large and complex data sets, with the ability to analyse and interpret data for decision-making.
Strong written communication skills are essential, as the role requires the ability to produce clear and concise reports and articles, effectively communicating energy performance, strategies, and outcomes to stakeholders at all levels.
This position is ideal for someone looking to make a meaningful impact on energy management in a large, dynamic environment.
Principal accountabilities
Utility Supply Management
* The management and operation of the systems used to obtain data from the meters at our sites (both our own sub-meters and supplier meters).
* Working with the energy broker, to procure contracts for the supply of utilities, tendering, presenting results and making recommendations to achieve the best deal for the University.
* Managing the relationships with utility suppliers and ensure prudent budget management.
* Assisting in the preparation of utility budgets.
* Developing and maintaining accurate records of energy consumption information (monitoring and targeting to assist in all of the above).
* Ensuring the quality and accuracy of utility invoices and authorising payments.
* Management of contractors and consultants who provide services under your control.
Energy and Water monitoring / reporting
* Reporting on energy and water consumption, costs against budget and carbon data. This should include any exception reports highlighting of variances, an analysis of the reasons why and potential solutions. Complete other reports as required, including HESA data.
* Using your expert knowledge of the energy and water markets to ensure that all utility invoices are checked / validated in a timely manner and any queries followed up and resolved.
* Regular statements to show the current spend against budgets and one-off reports as and when requested.
* To manage the interface between our broker and the Energy Manager database.
Compliance
* Establish, maintain and improve the necessary systems for providing information required for in house, statutory and regulatory reporting.
* Ensure that all Display Energy Certificates and Energy Performance certificates are renewed as required.
* Manage our revenue streams from FIT installations.
* Keep abreast of current legislation, emerging trends and fiscal drivers, reporting any changes, identifying any risks / costs for the University and making recommendations.
* Produce policy documents, standard operating procedures etc that meet the requirements of the accredited management system.
Projects
* Analyse data and identify opportunities for performance improvement.
* Work with the major capital team to ensure that all new projects utilise renewable technologies.
* Understand where to access grants and timelines for their availability to allow the University to take advantage. Assist with the preparation of bids.
* Identify potential projects and work with the wider team to complete feasibility studies or to pursue where budget can be identified.
* Complete metering and monitoring projects as required.
* Provide analysis of carbon savings for each project completed.
Engagement
* This is a critical element of the role. The post holder will promote the success of the University both internally and externally by engaging with others including staff, students, visitors, the wider community and external bodies including but not limited to Student engagement, supporting the education for Sustainable Development via the Responsible Futures group and raising the profile of the University through involvement in relevant sustainability awards, community practice groups and league tables.

Experience
* Demonstrable experience of working in an Energy Management based area in a large estate and with a large portfolio.
* Experience of using Building Management Systems.
* Management of significant revenue budgets.
* Experience of managing change with the ability to influence and promote.
* Experience of managing large complex data sets.
Skills, knowledge and abilities
* Excellent organisational, effective communication and presentation skills with the ability to communicate clearly with a variety of audiences.
* The ability to produce clear written reports and articles.
* Excellent IT skills, particularly with respect to spreadsheets. Ability to manage databases containing energy information.
* Proven project management skills.
* Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
* The ability to influence key stakeholders to ensure consistency across the Estates team and wider university.
* Developing and communicating plans and campaigns, including briefing and managing third parties to deliver tactical elements and measuring results.
* Proven ability to establish partnerships, lead collaborative working and cultural / behavioural change.

* Willingness and flexibility to travel and work between University and external sites in a cost effective and timely manner.
