Background
The College of Life and Environmental Sciences (CoLES) is home to around 5,000 students studying more than 100 undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research programmes. The College consists of 4 schools: Biosciences; Geography, Earth, and Environmental Sciences; Psychology; and Sport and Exercise and Rehabilitation. This post will oversee the CoLES CT scanner facility housed in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Role Summary
You will provide technical expertise, support, and guidance within the CoLES CT Scanner Facility. In addition to operating the CT scanner, you will oversee and develop the facility, carry out data processing, manage customers, and be responsible for safe operations. You will also be responsible for training others on the use of the equipment.
Main Duties
* Operate, maintain, and oversee use of the CT scanner.
* Carry out or assist in managing experiments within the facility.
* Advise on techniques and experimental procedures being used by researchers and/or students.
* Diagnose and resolve problems and suggest solutions regarding techniques and experiments.
* Acquire and process CT scan data of a range of samples.
* Curate existing CT scan data.
* Communicate directly and work closely with PIs, postdoctoral researchers, undergraduates and other internal and external users on projects and experiments.
* Maintain accurate records of all techniques and experimental procedures you carry out.
* Ensure compliance with legislation relevant to the area of research/activity.
* Troubleshoot technical problems and liaise with manufacturers for maintenance.
* Oversee invoicing of the facility and maintain a budget.
Health and Safety duties
* Proactive support for health and safety within the facility.
* Comply with all current rules and ensure all required assessments are in place, approved, and up to date.
* Fully understand the safety aspects of equipment operation and be able to demonstrate/train staff on the correct usage of the equipment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
Essential
* Extensive relevant workplace experience in operation of CT scanning equipment.
* Undergraduate degree in a relevant science field.
* Positive service attitude and ability to manage own workload.
* Knowledge of current legislation relevant to the role.
* Proficiency in commonly used software packages (e.g. CTPro, Mimics, Avizo).
Desirable
* Experience with a Nikon XTH 225 CT scanner.
* Experience of managing large quantities of data.
