The Airfield Operations Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the airfield to ensure a safe and efficient operating environment for both local and transient flying.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Inspect all areas of the airfield including but not limited to pavements, markings, signs, lighting, obstructions, Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH), fencing, habitat management, construction areas, Foreign Object Debris (FOD), and airfield fueling activities by required regulations.
2. Individuals must be able to operate a vehicle on an airfield and communicate with the air traffic control tower. Must be able to effectively coordinate closures with little to no disturbance to flying operations.
3. Coordinate construction activities on the airfield and prioritize discrepancies for maintenance repairs.
4. Respond to in-flight and ground emergencies on the airfield.
5. Familiar with base operations: maintaining events logs, flight schedules/logs, use of crash phone and emergency notifications, updating airfield status boards and airfield discrepancy logs.
6. Familiar with airfield driving program and requirements with the ability to effectively train new airfield drivers.
7. Conducts inspections of runways, taxiways, aprons for discrepancies, foreign object debris, runway safety/clear zone violations, runway incursions, flightline driving program compliance, runway surface conditions, security, bird/wildlife hazards, construction activities, pavement conditions, and other items that pose a significant adverse effect to safe aircraft operations.
8. Provides direct support to units and other military and civilian aircrews, during scheduled and unscheduled flying and ground activities.
9. Provides aircrews with information and assistance, necessary for planning and conducting safe flight operations.
10. Experience processing flight plans, conducting necessary research and/or queries in the coordination of scheduled flights.
11. Compiles data and conducts analysis to facilitate and continually improve airfield operations, to include information and management channels, programs, and devices.
12. Coordinates with community activities and tenant units to resolve conflicts or issues that surface.
13. Participates in the scheduling of airfield activities with tenant and transient unit commands, requiring use of the airfield.
14. Issue notice to airmen via the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) notam manager system.
15. Must be able to multitask in high-stress situations.
16. Coordinate all aircraft activities with relevant departments to ensure continuous operations.
17. Familiar with wildlife control devices such as bash cannons.
18. Enforce a FOD free airfield.
19. Work hand-in-hand with other departments, agencies, foreign governments, and foreign nationals often to complete work.
20. Coordinate day-to-day airfield activities.
21. Other duties as assigned by management.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
22. Civilian, DOD, or military experience inspecting an airfield and working base operations/flight dispatching.
23. Preferred USAF Airfield Management 5, 7, or 9 level qualified.
24. Ability to obtain an airfield driver's permit, and normal color vision.
25. Possession of a valid state driver’s license.
26. Three (3) years of airfield operations experience inspecting airfields and working base operations; Five (5) years preferred.
27. High school diploma or equivalent; prefer AA/AS degree in aviation.
28. Working knowledge of FAA, UFC, and ICAO regulations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS
29. Physical requirements may include lifting to 35 lbs., team lifting 50 lbs., climbing, extended sitting and standing, stooping, stretching, or bending.
30. Ability and willingness to work in an austere environment.
31. Observes and follows all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment.
