As Operator Assistant, you assist the Operations Manager and team in the control of day-to-day barley intake, drying, and production operation of the maltings. Carrying out cleaning duties as per rota and as requested. You will help in the production of malt to exceed customer quality specifications at the lowest possible cost from barley intake through to malt dispatch.
In this role, your core responsibilities will be to:
Production Process
Assist in the control of the malting production process from barley to malt as follows:
1. Barley intake, barley drying, and screening.
2. Barley to steep as per the batch card and PLC.
3. Steeping as per the batch card and PLC.
4. Germination as per the batch card and PLC.
5. Kilning as per the batch record sheet and PLC.
6. Malt/Pellets/Screenings out loading.
7. Monitoring of process control and reaction to any adverse conditions associated with the malt process.
8. Alerting management of any deviations in process control.
9. Preparation of samples.
10. Weighbridge operation.
11. Barley dressing.
12. Checks before dispatch (Lab checks).
13. Reporting of breakdowns/faults and initial inspections.
Hygiene/Cleaning
Completion of jobs as detailed on cleaning sheets. Recording of the same.
Documentation and Records
Barley dressing sheet, screenings analysis, barley drying sheet, all sections of the batch record sheets, cleaning sheet, magnet record sheets, checks before dispatch, shift change sheets, shift check sheets, fault log (as required), lab analysis sheets.
Statutory/Legal Obligations
Ensure compliance with all current legal & statutory obligations including, but not limited to, Health & Safety, HACCP/food safety, environmental, and employment legislation.
Master we are looking for ?
1. Understanding of the importance of health & safety, food safety, site hygiene, environmental issues, and record keeping.
2. Basic understanding of the electrical and mechanical operation of the maltings.
3. Practical hands-on attitude and ability.
4. Be able to develop understanding of the malting process – barley intake, barley drying, barley storage, steeping, germination, kilning, malt storage, malt dispatch.
5. Able to participate in the Engineering and Malting morning meetings.
6. Able to participate in training for Safety, Confined Space, Fork truck and shovel loader driver training and any other training required to carry out normal daily duties.
7. Able to learn enough about the Operator's role to be able to carry out shift work on a relief/ad-hoc basis.
8. Fluently in English.
