It’s an exciting time to join Southern Water, as we are currently transforming our Operational Control Centre and are seeking an additional Control Duty Manager (Waste) to join our diverse team.
We are looking for people that enjoy problem solving, analysing and work proactively using your own initiative. The role is office based and suitable candidates ideally have confidence in working with multiple IT systems and telephone skills.
As a Control Duty Manager, you will be part of an office-based control team who work tirelessly 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. You will normally be based at our Durrington office, with the requirement to work from our Falmer office if required.
You would be working a 6-week rotational shift pattern working a range of 12-hour shifts which include:
1. 3 days on 7 days off
2. 4 days on and 7 days off
3. 3 nights on and 7 days off
4. 4 nights on 7 days off.
Within this you will have a range of standby shifts which can be discussed in more detail at the interview stage.
The Control Duty Manager (CDM) proactively monitors and manages operational risk to ensure effective and appropriate prevention of and response to events and incidents 24/7. They coordinate, stand-up and drive performance through an established incident management framework to minimize the impact on customers and the environment. They will be able to manage and analyse complex (and sometimes incomplete) sets of data to determine root cause and required action all whilst conducting technical modelling and presenting as a risk expert for the department.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong leadership and people skill(s), effectively managing a team of Wastewater control room subject matter experts to improve the proactive prevention of and response to Wastewater incidents. They will be responsible for making sure these direct reports have the skills, competencies and tools needed to carry out their job effectively through performance management, coaching and development activities.
The Control Duty Manager will establish strong and sustained communication links with wider operations, aligning performance and expectation across the directorate. Acting as the key contact to the control room for multiple stakeholders, both internally and externally, you will have the opportunity to learn and influence change across many areas of the regulatory and operational landscape.
The role itself is fast paced and promises growth, development, and variation. It is also unique to other management positions through being critical to the safe control of operations process and the continuous monitoring and reporting of performance directly to our regulators.
The scope of the position is varied and flexible in line with the reactive nature of the control centre. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to manage varying levels of responsibility and to communicate with stakeholders of all levels across the wider business appropriately.
This role requires an assertive individual with strong time management skills, who can effectively balance priorities across operational risk and people management activities.
Accountabilities Estimated Time Spent:
Assessment and management of emerging risk/high-risk faults and events, taking appropriate action, and implementing necessary mitigation - tracking performance through to resolution through active performance checks and support of the wider wastewater control team. – 30%
Managing a diverse team of wastewater control room subject matter experts of varying skillsets and responsibilities. Demonstrating strong people skills and an aptitude for person centred approach, you will work with your team to identify areas for improvement and development ensuring high competency, engagement, and performance. - 30%
Incident Management participation – implementation and actions in accordance with business need with a strong focus and understanding of housekeeping and end to end impact. 20%
Strong and sustained communication links with the wider business, with a focused approach to operations. Building and maintaining positive, efficient working relationships working towards alignment of performance and expectation across the directorate. -10%
Ensuring effective capturing of environmental impact and accurate regulatory reporting (where required). – 10%

Knowledge Qualifications:
Essential:
· Advanced skills in relevant SW systems such as PRISM, CIM, SAP BAS, Workday, Ellipse & Waterworx.
· Advanced IT skills, particularly in MS office applications.
· Understanding of Environmental Regulations.
Desirable:
· Wastewater Treatment Processes.
· Understanding of the organisation’s environmental obligations and performance commitments.
· Understanding of WW operational environment.
· Understanding and awareness of customer impact.
