Role Summary:
The postholder will work as a specialist midwife to support women with diabetes mellitus under the care of the Maternal Medicine Unit within FMMU at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and maintain high standards of care for diabetes in pregnancy in line with the values of the OUH Foundation Trust. This includes assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
1. Be an experienced midwife in the care of women with diabetes mellitus with up-to-date knowledge of this specialist area
2. Be an autonomous practitioner and provide highly specialised advice and support to women with pre-existing diabetes, those who develop gestational diabetes, along with their families and other health care professionals
3. Demonstrate effective leadership and management skills and promote a proactive approach to diabetes care within Maternity Services by identifying and implementing training needs
4. Be available as an expert for diabetes for midwives and junior doctors to ensure care provided within the Trust is effective and evidence-based to support safe practice
5. Act as a professional resource for other healthcare professionals within secondary and primary care and will be expected to assist in the design and delivery of educational programmes and study days appropriate to this speciality area
6. Work closely with the diabetes multi-disciplinary team to deliver the best care to women and their families in line with evidence-based guidelines
7. Report directly to, and develop close working relationships with their Maternity Matron on operational, general management and clinical issues relevant to their practice area/team.
