No previous knowledge is required for this introduction to proofreading. The course is run over two days (Tuesdays 1st and 8th April 2025) with a total of 6 hours of live online time.
Through practical exercises using a variety of accessible texts, the course aims to teach students the basic proofreading skills and to help them feel comfortable with the methods of ensuring that a document is correct in both content and layout. The materials will be provided digitally.

About the course: This is a proofreading course for beginners. It includes short exercises that you will do on your own and then review with the group – a rare opportunity to get input on your work. The course is interactive and allows you to ask questions and engage with the tutor and other students.

2. Proofreading and reading – what’s the difference?
3. Correcting proofs using the British Standard proofreading symbols
4. Correcting PDFs on screen using Adobe Reader
5. Style sheets

About the tutor: Denise Cowle is a copy-editor and proofreader based in Glasgow. Her clients include a variety of global education publishers, for whom she works on English Language Teaching materials, and businesses and organisations who need support with written content: marketing materials, reports, web content and blogs. Denise also works with independent authors on non-fiction books.
She is an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading and currently serves on their council as marketing director. Denise is also a tutor for the CIEP proofreading and copy-editing online courses.
