Description Summary and purpose of position: We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Transport Shift Manager to join our Transport Team at the Wincanton Sainsbury site in Waltham Abbey. This role is central to ensuring the seamless and efficient delivery of goods, meeting customer expectations, and maintaining operational excellence. The Transport Shift Manager plays a pivotal role in the day-to-day operation of our transport team. By utilising driver resources effectively and overseeing shift performance, you will ensure all deliveries are completed on time, in full, and in compliance with legal, safety, and regulatory standards. Your work directly contributes to the success of the group, supporting Wincanton’s reputation for exceptional service and operational efficiency. We are seeking a dedicated person to join our team. This role requires flexible working hours, with the potential for both day and night shifts. Duties and responsibilities: · E nsure Health and Safety standards and Safe Systems of Work are rigorously adhered to within the Transport Department and all areas associated with delivering to the customer, including timely and accurate reporting of accidents, incidents, and near misses. · Lead and inspire the team to maintain and further develop a high level of teamwork, morale, and collaboration within the department. · Build strong rapport, trust, and respect with drivers, internal stakeholders, and other internal customers. · Deliver customer requirements and deadlines, ensuring all deliveries are completed on time, in full, and aligned with operational goals. · Motivate, manage, and develop a team of support staff, full-time drivers, and agency drivers to achieve site and customer objectives. · Deliver a robust and achievable daily transport delivery plan that aligns with operational targets. · Oversee driver management, including addressing infringements, monitoring telematics, and ensuring departures are on schedule. · Handle disciplinary, absence, and other people-related matters in line with company procedures, fostering a fair and supportive working environment. · Collaborate with on-site Union partners to maintain a smooth working relationship and support productive dialogue. · Ensure full legal compliance within the Transport Department, meeting the highest standards during internal and external audits. · Drive continuous improvement by proactively identifying and implementing operational efficiencies to enhance performance and compliance. Experience, Skills, and Attributes: · Transport Leadership Experience: Demonstrated in-depth experience managing teams within a transport environment, including handling complex or multiple issues under pressure. · People Knowledge: Solid working knowledge of disciplinary and absence procedures, with the ability to handle people-related matters professionally and effectively. · Resilience & Flexibility: Ability to work under pressure, maintain high standards, and adapt to evolving internal and external customer needs with a positive and solution-focused approach. · Customer Focus: Proven ability to build customer confidence and maintain strong relationships by demonstrating deep operational knowledge and exceptional professionalism. · Legal Compliance Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of legal requirements for transport operations, ensuring compliance and audit readiness. · Time Management & Organisation: Effective time planner with the ability to balance workloads, meet deadlines, and exhibit commercial awareness. · Interpersonal Skills: Strong integrity and professionalism, enabling the formation of effective relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders at all levels. · Technical Proficiency: Advanced PC skills with the ability to leverage IT systems and telematics to enhance operational performance and efficiency. · Problem-Solving & Performance Improvement: Proactive and inquisitive, with a passion for challenging teams to drive performance and implement continuous improvement initiatives. · Commitment to Excellence: Driven by energy and a commitment to improving overall contract performance, with a track record of delivering exceptional results. · CPC Qualification (Desirable): A Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Transport Management is desirable for this role, supporting a strong understanding of legal and regulatory requirements within transport operations.
