Professor in Practice - Civic Engagement
The University of Bristol Business School seeks to appoint a Professor in Practice (PiP). You will be a current practitioner with a distinguished track record in your field. We expect our PiPs to retain an ongoing role in practice, and therefore this is a part-time role of about 0.4 FTE (two days per week).
In line with the University of Bristol’s Vision 2030, this new post will help the School to build its collaboration with the city and beyond. We already have exciting projects underway, including the Bristol Digital Futures Institute that connects us to Bristol based organisations to build better digital futures, the Circular Agriculture Hub that connects us to local farmers and community organisations, and the Future Finance for All accelerator that connects us to SMEs and mid-tier financial services firms. Now we want to do more.
Perhaps you are a local entrepreneur who has scaled and sold your own venture? Perhaps you have been leading a third sector organization? Perhaps you have reached a stage of your career where you want to spend time on socially valuable activities? Whatever your history, this could be an exciting next step to make a significant difference in the relationship between the University and the region.
What will you be doing?
In the first instance, the Professor in Practice will help lead on three main initiatives:
* Developing an exciting enterprise programme with South Bristol Youth. The aim of the programme is to provide 16-17 year olds with an immersion into the worlds of business and entrepreneurship. You will help to raise awareness of the positive impact of higher education within under-represented groups in Bristol and to provide an inspirational and motivational experience that showcases the practical world of business and entrepreneurship to the group.
* Creating a transformative programme that will engage with both civic and global communities. Timed with our move to the new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, our free business programme will be the flagship offer within our global-civic engagement portfolio. You will help us to find a partner that shares our values, discover community needs and help Business School staff design and deliver the programme on a pro-bono basis.
* Evolving the Business School’s presence and convening role in the university’s emerging civic spaces, including the Bristol Rooms at Temple Quarter (a key space for researchers and students to work with civic and industry partners on shared societal challenges), the Barton Hill micro-campus, and the proposed new micro-campus in Hartcliffe.
You should apply if
You have:
* Extensive experience and a proven track record in industry or the third sector, with a network of contacts.
* Experience, capability and desire to act as a professional role model in the areas of teaching, scholarship, academic management and professional practice.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with business and civic leaders, students and our faculty.
* Experience of complex project management or leadership.
* In-depth understanding of your specialism to enable the development of new knowledge and understanding within the field.
* A collaborative and innovative mindset with the ability to contribute to the growth and success of our Business School.
* Degree educated within a relevant subject area.
* Masters degree (e.g. MA, MSc, MBA) or higher postgraduate research degree (e.g. PhD, DBA).
