We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Chief SpR Fellow in Medicine, with an interest in leadership, management and quality improvement for a 1 year appointment.
Your role provides senior trainees with 40% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement. Learning that chief registrars gain from the Royal College of Physicians' (RCP's) bespoke development programme will be put into practice in a supported environment that provides autonomy, flexibility and support to develop and support projects that address key local challenges and priorities. This may include service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce, and sustainability.
You will also spend 0.6 WTE undertaking clinical activities within the Acute Medical Unit. You will be part of an enthusiastic and dynamic team that aims to deliver excellent patient care and experience within its acute services. You will be part of our large team of doctors, managers and emergency staff and will have full access to the training and development opportunities available within our general and tertiary referral centre.
The post would suit someone who would like to take a year out during their higher training or an overseas doctor with at least 12 months previous experience in an NHS acute care speciality.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in healthcare leadership and management whilst developing skills in acute medicine.
Main duties of the job
The Chief Registrar role is a leadership role for senior specialty trainees in the medicine division, within Acute Medicine. The role provides 40-50% protected time to develop and implement local initiatives focusing on, for example, service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce and sustainability.
Key aspects of the role include:

* Involvement with internal medicine (in particular the acute medical take)
* Mentoring by senior clinical managers

Job responsibilities
The Chief Registrar will be responsible for contributing to one or more of the following activities within the Trust:
* Managing services
* Coordination of medical care
* Quality and service improvement

The Chief Registrar will be expected to attend departmental and divisional management meetings to gain an understanding of management and the wider social, political and economic influences on healthcare delivery. Where appropriate this will also involve trust board meetings. The role will involve leading any sessions on service development, improvement and transformation for which the Chief Registrar will have direct responsibility.
The Chief Registrar will also be involved in overseeing the planning of service delivery in relation to junior medical staff deployment. This may include planning and oversight of delegation of specific duties to non-medical staff. The Chief Registrar will have insight into patterns of out-of-hours working, shift working, safe cover / medical staffing, handover, hospital at night, communication and information technology systems.
An important function of the Chief Registrar will be to engage with junior medical staff within the Medical Division, to act as a conduit between them and the senior physicians and senior clinical managers responsible for service delivery. The Chief Registrar will also engage with allied healthcare professionals and may explore innovative solutions to medical workforce challenges.
The Chief Registrar will work closely with senior management and the Project Management Office, to initiate and lead a range of strategic projects, including service re-design and the introduction of new services. The projects selected will be tailored to the needs of the trust and individuals interests however will involve patient flow through the emergency floor and service delivery to reduce hospital admissions. All such activities will have patient safety and the delivery of high-quality, safe, compassionate care at their core.
The appointee will contribute to the junior doctor educational programme. This may include designing teaching programmes, overseeing the delivery and evaluation of teaching, and ensuring the quality of junior doctor education in the Medical Division, particularly with respect to internal medicine. It is envisaged that the Chief Registrar will work closely with the Education Fellow in AMU to deliver these programmes and will also contribute to the running of the Leadership Group programme currently run by the Department of Medical Education within the Trust.
The amount of time spent undertaking clinical commitment will be 60%. The Chief Registrar will ideally be undertaking dual training in internal medicine and a specialty. The Chief Registrar will be expected to contribute to the acute medical take. Specialty clinics can be arranged according to the trainees requirements.

Qualifications
* MRCP
* Additional related qualifications, e.g. intercalated degree, BSc, BA, BMedSci or equivalent
* Full registration with, and hold a current license to practice from the GMC
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualifications
Skills and Capabilities
* Evidence of clinical competencies in their medical specialty appropriate for their stage in training
* Evidence of interest in, and experience of teaching
* Instructor status in an advanced life support course (ALS, ATLS, EPLS, APLS) or equivalent course
