Main duties of the job • Carry out various ophthalmological techniques in the role of a Paediatric Optometrist. • Work with Orthoptists to plan, assess and implement treatment for individual patients. • Make decisions and offer advice about the optometric care of a child as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Job responsibilities • To work closely with clinicians in order to deliver a comprehensive range of optometric services to the highest standards of quality and care. • To assess, diagnose and manage the treatment of patients referred to the paediatric optometry service and other core optometry clinics where required. • To act as a source of expertise on the optical management of ocular motility and vision development disorders to patients, carers, consultants and other health professionals. • To participate in the delivery of highly specialist ophthalmic services that meet the changing needs of the department. • To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team consisting of Ophthalmologists, an Optometrist, Orthoptists, Nurses, HCAs, Secretarial and Medical Records staff. • To participate in research and clinical audit as required by DCH Ophthalmology service. Person Specification Education, Qualification & Training Essential • BSc (Hons) Ophthalmic Optics or Optometry (2i or abve) & completion of 12 month clinical postgraduate training post & achievement of all General Optical Council competencies as asessed by the College of Optometrists • Registration with the General Optical Council (GOC) • Evidence of continuing professional development Desirable • MOptom (master of Optometry) specialist optometry degree, achieving all General Optical Council competencies (Desirable) • Independent Prescribing qualification (DipIP) (Desirable) Knowledge & Experience Essential • Hospital ophthalmology clinical attachment or experience elsewhere • Community optometry experience • Sound clinical experience and judgment underpinned by specialist theoretical knowledge base • Ability to interpret diagnostic tests including OCT scans and images Desirable • Experience in the development and implementation of evidence-based practice and knowledge of ophthalmology disease including use/development of protocols to ensure appropriate, specialist care is provided for improved patient outcomes • Teaching experience • Audit experience • Research experience Skills & Abilities Essential • Ability to demonstrate empathy and professionalism throughout patient consultations and achieve sound clinical outcome, even when receiving/delivering complex or distressing information • Ability to analyse and prioritise complex medical information to help devise appropriate specialize care plans • Knowledge of MS Office (including Word, Excel and Outlook) • Good keyboard skills • Ability to undertake highly accurate record keeping using paper and electronic systems • Good time management skills • Ability to organize, plan and prioritise workload • Good team working and people skills • Excellent communication skills • Ability to present information both orally and written in a clear, logical manner • Flexible and reliable approach to working patterns • Caring and considerate attitude • Well motivated and enthusiastic • Ability to work under pressure • Able to carry out moderate to intense effort throughout the working day and carry out concurrent activities with frequent interruptions • Demonstrates attention and accuracy to detail • Commitment to non-discriminatory practice • Professional approach in difficult or emotional situations Desirable • Ability to pass on knowledge and deliver training • Good teaching and presentation skills • Confident
