Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, dynamic and enthusiastic occupational therapist with excellent multidisciplinary communication to lead and develop the Major Trauma Occupational Therapy team. This post is integral to the delivery of a high standard of therapeutic care and is integral to the multidisciplinary team’s ability to provide smooth and appropriate discharge planning with the wider community MDT. The successful candidate will work as a senior clinician in major trauma areas.
The successful candidate must have extensive demonstrable experience at a senior level in the field of major trauma, trauma orthopaedics, cardiothoracic or neurosurgery, working in the acute environment; be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of personal autonomy, clinical skill, leadership and proven knowledge of the national healthcare agenda that impacts on day-to-day life in a major trauma department. You must have good inter-personal skills, work well in a multidisciplinary team environment and have the ability to lead a team in challenging times.
Main duties of the job
1. To perform as Occupational Therapy Team Lead in your specialist area. Responsible for leading and contributing to the continuing development of a comprehensive, 7-day working specialist occupational therapy service.
2. To stand in for Head of Service in their absence and to represent Occupational Therapy at Trust wide and other meetings, as required (both within and outside the Trust).
3. The Team consists of Band 7 Occupational Therapist (Post holder) and a range of qualified and support staff.
4. The Team receives referrals directly from their Multidisciplinary Team and at Whiteboard / Ward Rounds meetings.
5. Post holder to provide a comprehensive assessment, treatment, and evaluation of all referred patients.
6. Post holder to be responsible for leading the Team and providing day-to-day management, support, supervision, and organization of workload for their staff. To be responsible for recruitment within the team.
7. To support the Head of Service in the day-to-day management of the department and stand in in their absence.
8. Post holder is professionally and legally accountable for his/her own action and works with no supervision.
Person specification
Qualifications
* To hold degree, or equivalent in Occupational Therapy.
* To be HCPC registered.
* To have extensive demonstrable experience as an Occupational Therapist in the physical field.
* To have proven knowledge of a wide range of OT equipment and minor adaptations.
* To have relevant qualification.
* To have worked in the physical field and have demonstrable experience of pressure on wards.
* To have demonstrable experience in leading a Team of Occupational therapy staff.
Knowledge & Experience
* To have extensive demonstrable experience as an Occupational Therapist in the physical field.
* To have worked with a wide range of Neurosurgical, Cardiothoracic and Orthopaedic conditions e.g. TBI, SCI, traumatic amputees & multiple fractures.
* To have specialist proven knowledge & demonstrable experience of a wide range of OT assessments and interventions relevant to these patient groups, demonstrated by advanced clinical reasoning.
* To have good verbal and written English skills.
* To have proven knowledge of a wide range of OT equipment and minor adaptations.
* To have demonstrable experience in liaising with community services.
* To have demonstrable experience in caseload management.
* To have skill and demonstrable experience of staff appraisal.
* To have demonstrable experience of allocating and assessing the work of a Team.
* To have experience in conducting audits and research & development activities.
* To have evidence of continuing professional development.
* To have demonstrable experience in teaching other members of the MDT team both internal and external settings.
* To have demonstrable experience in delivering patient education.
* To have leadership training.
* To be skilled in handling traumatized or anxious patients and families.
