Job Overview
The postholder will provide a clinical role in the nurse-led endoscopy service for patients undergoing assessment and investigation for gastrointestinal disease. They will perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures and follow agreed protocols.
They will be responsible for managing their own patient caseload and working alongside the multi-disciplinary team to provide clinically effective and efficient care and treatment.
They will ensure that the unit meets quality standards that comply with Joint Advisory Group (JAG) requirements and the Global Rating Scale (GRS).
The post-holder is expected to undertake 5 service lists a week and support the service with clinical audits.
Develop and continuously focus on improving patient-centred care and overall experience within the endoscopy care pathway.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
Clinical
1. Perform Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy procedures as part of the weekly schedule in the endoscopy unit.
2. Undertake direct patient care, expected to undertake 5 service lists a week, and contribute to the review of histology clinics.
3. Undertake procedures within agreed protocols and guidelines.
4. Manage a caseload of patients.
5. Obtain informed consent from patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy.
6. Identify clinical abnormalities and act upon them within agreed protocols.
7. Develop protocols and guidelines for the clinical area and specialty.
8. Ensure all patients have a comprehensive plan of care discussed with them, including an assessment of clinical risks.
9. Document treatment and care, including variances.
10. Work closely with Endoscopy Administrators to ensure coordination of access to diagnostic tests and treatment.
11. Provide clinical and managerial leadership that promotes effective multi-disciplinary contributions to service delivery.
12. Handle complex clinical situations and respond to adverse events or reactions.
13. Complete training to operate as an independent Bowel Screen practitioner.
14. Deliver nursing care in accordance with NMC code of conduct and hospital policy, collaborating with medical staff and other team members.
15. Ensure effective multi-disciplinary teamwork for optimal care and resource use.
16. Deliver bad news to patients and/or relatives regarding serious diagnoses.
17. Be prepared to respond to urgent and emergency situations.
18. Act as a non-medical independent nurse prescriber or be willing to undertake training to prescribe IV sedation and muscle relaxants.
19. Autonomously discharge or plan care for patients with benign gastric/colorectal/rectal conditions.
Education
1. Possess highly developed specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and experience, with professional knowledge at degree level and specialist training at Masters level.
2. Provide clinical leadership and expert nursing service within Endoscopy.
3. Develop and update educational programmes for staff, patients, and relatives.
4. Advise nursing and medical colleagues on managing lower GI/upper GI disease.
5. Lead developments and innovations in nursing practice throughout the Trust.
6. Act as a role model and mentor to staff, providing education and support in caring for colorectal patients.
7. Maintain professional development through appraisals and a personal development plan.
8. Update educational needs through courses, conferences, and mandatory training.
Management
1. Coordinate own workload.
2. Participate in service reviews and audits to ensure compliance with JAG accreditation.
3. Identify opportunities for service development and act as a change agent within the gastro/endoscopy unit.
Research / Audit
1. Participate in annual JAG audits.
2. Collaborate in auditing nurse endoscopy practices across the Trust.
3. Promote and engage in nursing research within endoscopy for evidence-based practice.
Professional Responsibilities
1. Act in accordance with national policy procedures, legislation, and NMC standards.
2. Secure regular clinical supervision with an appropriate supervisor.

Person Specification
Skills
* Knowledge of gastro-intestinal disease processes.
* Willingness to extend clinical knowledge and skills, and engage in research and audits.
* Understanding of physiological systems, disease processes, and associated medical technologies.
Knowledge
* Advanced knowledge of GI tract anatomy and physiology.
* Clinical audit experience.
* Pharmacology relevant to gastrointestinal disease.
Experience
* 3 years post-registration experience in a relevant area.
* Experience in Nurse Led care.
* Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse.
* Documented evidence of CPD.
