Job summary Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United Kingdom. If diagnosed early, bowel cancer is treatable and curable. Bowel cancer screening can reduce the risk of developing bowel cancer. The bowel cancer screening programme has been operational in Cornwall since 2009. Due to the expansion of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme in Cornwall, we are looking for an exceptional nurse to join our growing team. As a Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) you will support and guide participants along the screening pathway with care and compassion, providing information and advice, assessing suitability, and enabling people to make decisions on this important undertaking. You will become part of an increasing team of specialist nurses and skilled clinicians all delivering the highest standards of care and treatment within a national programme. Two posts are available, one at 25 hours per week and one at 20 hours per week Main duties of the job The Bowel Cancer Screening Programme lowered the age of inclusion to offer bowel screening to all 50 to 74 year olds in Cornwall in 2024. This age extension has been a gradual process and by joining the team you will be assisting in the delivery and development of this worthwhile and very well-respected national programme. In addition to the age extension, management of genetically predisposed bowel cancer surveillance has been taken over by BCS. An SSP is the main coordinator of the patient's journey through screening and therefore requires excellent communication skills, time management skills, enthusiasm and motivation and a wide understanding of health conditions. You will need to be able to discuss complex cases with the multi-disciplinary team and have a good understanding of the key performance indicators attached to the programme. A good understanding of multiple IT systems will also be essential to the role and training will need to be undertaken by the successful applicant. The role is dependent on the completion and passing of the nationally recognised SSP course delivered externally. The successful candidate must be prepared to undertake the compulsory period of degree level study with associated time away from home, to meet this requirement and before qualifying to practice independently.
