This post is eligible for a Golden Hello payment of £2,750 for new starters who are external to the Trust. This is payable in 3 instalments over a 2 year period. John Eastwood Hospice is a purpose-built unit with 12 beds, providing specialist palliative care services to patients with complex incurable progressive illness and to those important to them. We are delighted to offer various hours up to full time, giving flexibility and opportunities to various candidates.
We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated nurses with a keen interest in palliative and end of life care who wish to further develop their skills in this specialty and be part of our growing team.
Main duties of the job
The inpatient unit is Consultant led and provides care for patients with complex conditions, and those important to them, as they approach the end of their lives. As a staff nurse within our inpatient unit, you will deliver a range of nursing care to patients and those important to them across the working shift. This includes not exhaustively:
* Symptom management through holistic assessment and management of a patient's medication.
* High levels of care and compassion to patients and to those important to them as they approach the end of their lives.
* Delivery of medication via various routes including intravenous therapy and syringe drivers.
* All daily care needs including personal hygiene, wound care and pressure area management, support with mobility and rehabilitation, and care in the last hours and days of life.
Staff within the inpatient unit work a rota of 12hr shifts across days, nights, and weekends and the successful candidate should be willing to meet this demand.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Caring for patients as they approach their end of life is physically and emotionally demanding and the role requires frequent exposure to distressing situations. Therefore the successful candidate will be resilient, empathic, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and be comfortable working in this environment. All staff have access to regular supervision, spiritual and psychological support through peers, ward leaders, chaplaincy, and Clinical Psychology. The hospice is committed to providing a psychologically safe environment in which to enable new ideas, innovation, and for staff to thrive.
As well as the duties outlined above and in the attached job description, you will be able to demonstrate accurate record keeping, the ability to prioritise your workload, and to plan and evaluate patient care. You will also support the learning and development needs of others, including student nurses.
The role will give the successful candidate the opportunity to work across the hospice including within our Living Well Centre. This is our day therapy provision that provides care and support to patients and those important to them on a sessional basis. You will also be supported to take charge of shifts and engage in MDT meetings and ward rounds. You will be supported to undertake continuous professional development including course and conference attendance away from the organisation and encouraged to bring your own ideas for improving outcomes for our patients.
The hospice benefits from the support of the Charitable Trust and you will be encouraged to access internal and external training opportunities that will help to develop your knowledge and skills, including advance communication skills.

Qualification
* First level registered nurse with current registration.
* Willingness to undertake training according to the needs of the service.
* Approved mentor course.
* Specific post-basic study relating to palliative care.
* Recognised qualification in palliative care or equivalent.
Experience
* Able to demonstrate experience as a staff nurse in a relevant adult care setting, or if newly qualified, able to demonstrate how learning experience has prepared for this specialist role.
* Palliative care and end of life care experience.
* Recent experience in a specialist palliative care setting.
* Experience of mentoring students.
* Experience of coordinating in a ‘stand alone’ unit such as a Hospice.
* Sound clinical skills.
* Able to demonstrate an ability to prioritise own workload and ability to use initiative.
* Demonstration of team working.
