Content Writer and Editor - British Sign Language BSL
Location: UK remote (options for office/hybrid working available)
Annual Salary: £25,500 per annum
Contract: 12 months fixed term

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (core hours 10am-2pm Monday-Friday)
You’ll be joining a team of passionate educators working to write and edit Twinkl’s online BSL content for educators across the UK. The majority of your time will be spent working with Content Writers, Editors, Designers and Illustrators, engaging with product priorities to create high-quality, inclusive and accessible content for our customers.
Your weekly activities could include:
1. Ideating, researching and creating new resources to support BSL teaching and learning across the curriculum for EYFS, KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4;
2. Responding to editorial feedback and collaborating with colleagues to elevate a resource to an excellent standard;
3. Checking content and providing constructive feedback to other writers;
4. Sharing your specialist knowledge of British Sign Language and D/deaf Awareness with the team to help create engaging, high-quality resources that reflect the needs of D/deaf learners and their teachers;
5. Using your knowledge of working with D/deaf learners and those with communication needs to inform resource creation;
6. Producing resources that respond directly to customer feedback and current teaching methodologies for BSL;
7. Meeting regularly with the team to discuss and develop new ideas;
8. Preparing and hosting Teachmeet presentations to support teachers, teaching assistants and other practitioners working with D/deaf learners.
To succeed in the role, you will:
1. Have completed primary qualified teacher status: PGCE, B.Ed or equivalent;
2. Have 2 years of full classroom teaching experience after QTS is complete;
3. Have a strong working knowledge of British Sign Language, ideally holding a qualification such as BSL Level 2 and above or equivalent;
4. Have experience teaching BSL and/or working closely with D/deaf learners across a range of age groups (EYFS, Primary, Secondary) i.e. TA/HLTA;
5. Be confident in preparing and delivering online CPD presentations (Teachmeets) or video content that help educators to embed BSL into their classroom practice;
6. Be a fantastic communicator who thrives when working in a collaborative, creative team;
7. Be confident using digital platforms such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and G Suite, and comfortable learning to use new internal systems;
8. Have a passion for creating accessible and inclusive educational content;
9. Be self-motivated with a desire for continuous professional development.
In this role, you will learn:
1. How to ideate and create diverse, inclusive, engaging and varied resources for children and teachers right through to publication;
2. How to check content and provide feedback for other writers;
3. How to work in ‘agile’ teams, allowing you to solve problems and change tasks quickly to meet deadlines;
4. How to collaborate with educators and D/deaf education specialists through focus groups and customer feedback;
5. How to apply your BSL and D/deaf education expertise to create innovative, practical resources for educators across the UK;
6. How to use project tracking software and internal content management system;
7. How to contribute to the wider Inclusion team at Twinkl.
You'll work with:
1. The supportive and experienced Inclusion team;
2. Your own direct Line Manager and Production Team Leader;
3. Our team of qualified teachers who currently write, edit and produce content for the Inclusion team;
4. Our amazing in-house design and illustration teams, collaborating daily to produce the beautiful, polished resources that Twinkl are known for.
We're interested in anyone who meets one, or a combination of the following:
1. Has taught or planned BSL content for either primary and/or secondary learners;
2. Has experience teaching D/deaf learners, supporting them to access the curriculum using BSL, whether as a qualified teacher, TA or HLTA;
3. Has worked as a BSL specialist, D/deaf education lead or inclusion coordinator, with a deep understanding of how to support learners who use BSL;
4. Has practical experience of adapting curriculum content to meet the needs of learners who are D/deaf or hearing impaired;
5. Is confident delivering CPD Teachmeets/video content on BSL teaching strategies, Deaf awareness and inclusive classroom practice;
6. Has access to a fast and reliable internet connection (at least 6MB download and 1MB upload). We recommend using speedtest.net to check.
