Do you want to research our stored collection and share stories about objects to engage our audiences? Are you a good communicator who can collaborate with others effectively?
About Us
This position is based at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton within the Collection Services Department. The 545-acre site plays a vital role in the Science Museum Group's (SMG) sustainability activities as well as hosting a range of commercial activities. At the heart of the Park is the National Collections Centre, home to around 80% of the Science Museum Group Collection.
We are now recruiting for 2 x Assistant Curators based at the National Collections Centre at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon. The roles are contracted until December 2025, 35 hours pw.
About the role
As Assistant Curator, you will work across the collections, providing research and practical collections support. In liaison with the SMG Curators, you will identify and catalogue objects, improve existing records, and undertake tasks towards acquisition and disposal. You may work with volunteers and will help to engage our audiences with the project and the collection.
We are recruiting for two separate roles. One Assistant Curator position will focus on SMG's diverse collection across the hangars at NCC. The other position will focus on materia medica collections stored in the new Hawking Building. The successful candidate will be able to express an interest for their favoured role.
About you
You will have knowledge of the history and current practice of science, technology, medicine, or engineering and experience of working with stored object collections. You will be able to work and collaborate effectively with colleagues, subject specialists, and external organisations.
Crucially, you will have good research skills and the ability to use your good written and verbal communication skills and creative approach to engage our audiences with stored collections. You will also be able to organise and prioritise work in order to meet deadlines.
Don't feel you meet all of the criteria? At SMG, we are committed to building a workforce that is open for all, and welcome you to apply, even if your experience doesn't fit perfectly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
