The Douglas Ewart High School is a six-year comprehensive, non-denominational Secondary school, serving the area of Wigtownshire called the Machars and is one of fifteen secondary schools in Dumfries and Galloway. The current school roll is 592. There are 10 associated primary schools, ranging from small rural communities to larger town schools. The school benefits from an active and well-established Parent Council who are supportive of the school and work collaboratively to ensure the school is an integral part of its community.
The supportive management structure consists of a Headteacher, three Depute Headteachers and a School Support Manager. The Douglas Ewart High School has a motivated staff and an extensive campus. It underwent major refurbishment in 2017, and now incorporates an annex for the performing arts. The school has extensive playing fields and sports facilities, with the Merrick Leisure Centre (which includes a swimming pool) integrated within the campus. It also has exceptionally strong links with the Youth Work Services team based within the school which ensures every child has the opportunity to develop extra-curricular activities.
The Douglas Ewart High School is situated in a picturesque rural environment. The area is a popular holiday destination with access to hills, lochs and beaches. The school is located in the market town of Newton Stewart (with a population of 4,000) and sits just off the A75 Euroroute which links Ireland to South West Scotland and England. Referred to as the Gateway to the Galloway Hills due to its proximity to the Galloway Forest Park and surrounding hills. The main local industries are agriculture, forestry, and tourism. The town hosts a local livestock market, and a number of services to support the farming industry.
Newton Stewart has a thriving and very active community which prides itself on the variety of clubs and associations within the area covering various sports & hobbies to suit a wide range of interests and ages. The nearby Galloway Forest Park was the first dark skies park in the UK, the Galloway area is also within a UNESCO biosphere. 7Stanes Mountain Biking trails are 4 miles away and Wigtown - Scotland’s National Booktown is just 6 miles from the school.
Good housing is affordable. The area is easy to reach by car from Dumfries (50 miles), Ayr (44 miles) and Stranraer (25 miles). The port of Cairnryan for ferries to Northern Ireland is 28 miles away and train links from 11 miles.
