This position is responsible for the development of innovative products to solve customer fire protection challenges. The primary function is ensuring designs meet customer expectations for performance, manufacturability, and installation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develops familiarity with products and manufacturing processes across the Viking portfolio including, but not limited to Sprinklers, Valves, Special Hazards (Foams and Gases), Detection, and CPVC products.
2. Analyzes assigned projects for risks and develops plans to mitigate throughout the development process. Maintains DFMEA's and project plans, and supports PFMEA and Control Plan activity.
3. Leads product development projects using defined project management tools and ISO processes. Manages product engineering projects to scope, on time, and within budget requirements.
4. Utilizes engineering tools, advanced technologies, and external resources, if required, to design products that meet customer requirements.
5. Coordinates with Purchasing, Supplier and Manufacturing Quality, and Manufacturing Engineering counterparts during all stages of product development to achieve product designs capable of manufacture.
6. Creates engineering drawings and specifications to ensure predictable assembly and performance to design intentions, utilizing GD&T and Viking engineering standard practices.
7. Communicates with customers and project stakeholders to ensure design targets are understood, status is conveyed, roadblocks are mitigated, and any changes in scope are evaluated throughout the project.
8. Leads activity with approval laboratories to ensure timely completion of projects with a goal of 100% First Pass Yield.
9. Ensures compliance by maintaining working knowledge of approval standards, company manuals, and other test literature.
10. Designs, adapts, and develops internal test methods, procedures, and test equipment to simulate approval lab and external customer requirements.
11. Ensures documentation of project activity throughout the project, including project logs, reports, test procedures, lab work orders, laboratory test requests, material requisitions, purchase order requirements, bill of materials, and engineering change requests.
12. Follows safety protocols while operating machines and other equipment within R&D Lab, and ensures equipment, testing, and lab work areas maintain a high level of cleanliness.
13. Operates test and inspection equipment as needed, including but not limited to Comparator, Contracer, Calipers, Thread Gages, Instron, Hydrostatic, and Leakage test equipment.
14. Ownership of product engineering change implementation from initiation through closure.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
2. High level of analytical ability. Proven history of problem-solving skills required.
3. 3-7 years experience in product design and development.
4. Practical application of GD&T, datum dimensioning, and tolerance stack-ups.
5. Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including CNC machining, die casting, forging, stamping, and automated assembly.
6. Demonstrated teamwork, project management, communication, and leadership skills.
7. Proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent.
8. Understanding of basic FEA and experience analyzing output.
