The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) was founded in 1853 to promote the art and science of photography for the benefit of the public. It was granted Royal patronage by Queen Victoria, a Royal charter by Queen Elizabeth II, and HRH The Princess of Wales is its Patron. Since 1962 the RPS has been a registered charity with educational objectives.
As a membership organisation that celebrates diversity and inclusion, the subscription fees from approaching 11,000 UK and international members allows the RPS to deliver its charitable objectives. Membership is open to everyone, anywhere in the world. Whether they are an enthusiast or professional photographer, a photographic artist or an imaging scientist; the only requirement to become a member is a passion for photography.
Among its distinguished Honorary Fellows are some of the most celebrated names in photography, including Sir Don McCullin, David Bailey, Sally Mann, David Hockney, Martin Parr, Sebastio Salgado, Ralph Gibson Annie Leibovitz, Nobukazu Teranishi, Sir David Attenborough, and Steve McCurry.
Through a blend of in person and online events organised by the active volunteer-led regional community and 16 special interest groups, members share, inspire, learn and develop their photographic skills. The RPS distinctions, including the coveted Fellowship, are the most widely-recognised and respected indicators of photographic excellence anywhere in the world. The RPS is governed by a Board of nine dedicated and highly committed Trustees.
The Executive Director / CEO will be transformative to the organisation, and will lead the RPS on the next phase of its modernisation agenda.
