As a Senior Materials Laboratory Technician, you will support the management and delivery of materials engineering services within Balfour Beatty, planning and undertaking inspection and testing on site and in the laboratory, identifying and reporting areas of risk and opportunity.
Ideally, this role would suit a candidate who is passionate and willing to go the extra mile to exceed expectations. A quick learner, adaptable to change, someone who is organised and has a key focus on meeting the requirements of the customer would succeed in this role.
What you'll be doing
Typical Duties include:
* Support the delivery of Sustainability activities.
* Establish and maintain safe methods of work for the materials team on site and in the laboratory.
* Maintain high standards of work and compliance with UKAS accreditation requirements.
* Comply with the site quality system for the materials testing laboratory, including materials reporting.
* Deliver results by deadlines as required by the contract and project teams.
* Maintain equipment calibrations and notify the lab manager of any defects requiring attention.
* Identify, record, and report Best Practices to project and offsite.
* Produce summary compliance reports of material compliance.
* Undertake audits of the Laboratory Quality System and ensure that identified findings are closed out.
* Manage the dispatch of samples to external test laboratories and review reports.
* Daily allocation of testing resources.
* Managing supplier test results as required by the contract.
* Training and development of junior staff to ensure a succession plan is in place.
Who we're looking for
The following qualities/experience are essential:
* Previous experience working in a UKAS accredited laboratory and working with construction materials and specifications.
* Experience in auditing, training/development of junior staff.
* Focus on health and safety within the laboratory, including writing/reviewing risk assessments, methods statements, and carrying out daily briefings to the site technicians.
* Ability to operate and work to an agreed budget.
* Materials technical experience to advise the contracts where necessary.
* Proficient IT skills in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.
* Must hold a valid CSCS card and a full driving licence; desirable to hold B & E for safe towing of coring rig.
The following qualities/experience are desirable:
* SMSTS qualified and a member of a professional institute.
