An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Liverpool & North Mersey Diabetic Eye Screening department for the role of Specialist Screener.
Applicants will be expected to screen and grade eligible people with diabetes in the Liverpool and North Mersey Diabetic Eye Screening Programme cohort according to national standards as specified in: NHS public health functions agreement 2019-20 (england.nhs.uk).
Main duties of the job
1. Provide retinal screening and grading at primary, secondary and arbitration levels.
2. Perform specialised screening and grading of patients on the digital surveillance with optical coherence tomography (OCT) pathway.
3. Sole responsibility for the assessment of patients of all ages, abilities and wide-ranging communication abilities, tailoring the delivery of care as required.
4. Provide a screening service within secure venues e.g. HMP or secure hospitals.
5. Act as a key point of contact for the screening team, providing clinical advice, options and support when delivering care to patients on a daily basis.
6. Attend regular meetings to discuss service delivery, providing feedback on any issues, incidents or risks escalated by the screening team.
7. Oversee the daily running of the screening service, ensuring business continuity through liaison with the administration team.
8. Assist the Programme manager in forward planning to ensure the screening service is compliant with national standards and quality assurance and key performance indicators are met.
9. Provide technical support to screening staff, assisting in issues relating to camera or IT failure.
10. Undertake other administrative duties as specified by the programme manager.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
Essential
* Educated to degree level (or evidence of equivalent knowledge).
* Passed the Level 3 diploma for health screeners (unless attained the previous City & Guilds diabetic eye screening qualification).
Desirable
* Qualified workplace assessor for the Level 3 diploma for health screeners.
* Registered with the Academy of Healthcare Science.
Experience
Essential
* Evidence of high standard of grading via previous participation in monthly 'Test and Training' exercise.
* Technical experience of retinal screening equipment and software.
* Experience of clinical audit / research.
Desirable
* Experience of teaching retinal screening and grading.
* Management or team leader experience.
Knowledge
Essential
* Knowledge of digital photography.
* Understand and accept the need to maintain confidentiality.
* Recognise limitations of own clinical competence and seek support from senior staff.
