With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, invest over £10bn in transmission projects across our network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Main Plant Engineering team will play key roles in supporting SPEN to deliver the transmission network required to meet Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.
This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of innovative engineering! You will be paving the way to NetZero using new technologies to develop and deliver Main Plant engineering solutions for transmission networks (132kV and above) for the evolving energy landscape.
As a vital part of SPEN, you will be exposed to a wide range of responsibilities at a pivotal time as ScottishPower leads the fight against climate change and strives to deliver our ambitious growth and investment plans. You can expect to work with and learn from a broad range of stakeholders across SPEN, the Iberdrola Group, and relevant external bodies.
What you’ll be doing
1. Preparing basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for Switchgear, Transformers, and other electrical network equipment.
2. Defining Main Plant and auxiliary apparatus requirements for input to System Construction Authorisation (SCA), Project Technical Specifications, and BETTA documentation, and advising on construction and outage programmes.
3. Ensuring designs and equipment meet current legislation, policies, and operational requirements.
4. Preparing engineering documentation following quality processes to meet deliverables for PQPs and BETTA.
A Lead Design Engineer on Main Plant Engineering for SPEN, you will be expected to:
1. Provide technical support on matters concerning the design, construction, and operation of Main Plant and lead the technical resolution of site/construction substation electrical issues.
2. Provide technical assessment of tender submissions, preparation/review of Main Plant design drawings and specifications.
3. Contribute to training needs assessment for new products and develop and deliver technical, operational, and safety packages for such products.
4. Liaise across multi-disciplinary engineering teams to provide end-to-end design solutions.
5. Maintain awareness of technological advances and industry best practices.
6. Assist with evaluation and application of new ideas, technical developments, new equipment, and alternative working methods to provide cost savings, efficiencies, and improved safety.
7. Assess engineering documentation from feasibility to detailed design in compliance with business requirements and support the preparation of accurate budgets for new projects.
8. Mentor and support other members of the engineering team.
What you’ll bring
1. Degree in an Engineering discipline or HND with relevant experience.
2. Chartered Engineer Status (or working towards).
3. Good inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships.
4. Ability to apply CDM and Health & Safety best practices in a design environment.
5. Ability to investigate and understand technical characteristics of substation plant and associated equipment.
6. Understanding of the plant and equipment deployed for transmission networks and how it is operated/maintained.
7. Experience in implementing new technologies and engineering solutions to achieve reductions in project lifetime costs.
8. Experience in electrical infrastructure projects and knowledge in one or more of the following areas at voltages from 33kV to 400kV:
o Switchgear
o Transformers
o Transmission and/or Distribution system design
