An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology to join our team at University Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB).
UHDB has a national and international reputation in Diabetes and endocrinology and you would be joining a team of consultants, diabetes nurse specialists, diabetes specialist dietitians and endocrine nurse specialists who are friendly, supportive, innovative, dynamic, always seeking to develop and improve services and deliver high quality care across the board.
There are opportunities to develop research, teaching and educational supervision interests and for the development of services within subspecialty areas.
• Delivery of high quality, evidence based care and treatment to patients with diabetes and endocrine conditions across UHDB and working with the communities of Derbyshire and Staffordshire.
• Supporting inpatient wards in delivering care to inpatients with diabetes/ endocrinology and general medicine problems across our wards.
• Mentorship, training and clinical supervision of doctors in training and medical students.
• Reviewing practice in line with local/ national/ international guidance, development and implementation of local policies and involvement with clinical governance.
• Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & continuing medical education activity locally, regionally & nationally as appropriate.
• Provision of an out of hours’ service with your Consultant colleagues including on-call rota commitments, as indicated in the enclosed job plan.

Duties & Responsibilities of the Post
In addition to any specialist interests all consultants will be involved in providing a general clinical service to the Trust.
1. Provision with consultant colleagues of a service to Staffordshire, Derbyshire & surrounding areas with responsibility for diagnosis & treatment of patients at the hospitals & clinics at which you have duties.
2. Responsible for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for appropriate delegation to & training of your staff.
3. Provision of an out-of-hours service with consultant colleagues including on-call rota commitments.
4. Active participation in undergraduate & post graduate education, including training sessions for Foundation Years, Specialty Registrars and medical students. Additional SIFT PA may be available if an applicant wishes
5. Provision of cover for your consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients & supervision of doctors in training.
6. Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.
7. Participate in clinical audit under local arrangements.
8. Commitment to entering patients into NIHR trials where appropriate (if the appointee has an interest in research this would be supported by the Trust & the Division).
9. Commitment to taking part in annual appraisal process which will be undertaken by the Assistant Clinical Director for Endocrinology and Diabetes
10. Responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust. It is mandatory for all Consultants to keep up to date with evidence based practice.
11. Responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as “Duties of a Doctor”, “Good Medical Practice”, & the “GMC Performance Procedures” .
12. Exceptional requirements to undertake additional duties for limited periods within geographical area specified above or undertake duties at other hospitals in the event of a major disaster or incident.
