Clinical Fellow (Higher) in Cardiac Surgery - QEHB
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
The University Hospital Birmingham provides a local, regional and supra-regional adult cardiac surgery service with all major sub-specialities on site in a large new hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. The new hospital is one of the largest in the UK and provides all major medical and surgical specialties to the local population in addition to many regional and supra-regional services. It is a designated major trauma centre and also houses the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine.
We are seeking to appoint Junior Specialist Doctors (registrar level) to support the Cardiac Surgical Service at QEHB.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will participate in all activities of the service, including pre-, intra- and post-operative care, and will be directly accountable to the consultant staff. The JSD will be involved in the care of cardiac patients in the Critical Care Unit. Protocols of management, in the form of a manual, are in place and the JSD is supervised and supported by cardiothoracic surgical staff and intensive care and anaesthetic staff at all times.
There are twice daily ward rounds, and formal handover is expected to occur between colleagues. Locally developed protocols assist the appropriate management of pre and post-operative patients. A team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners provide ward-based support.
The post-holder will provide assistance in the operating room and receive consultant-delivered operative training as appropriate. A team of Surgical Care Practitioners supports the operative service.
The post-holder's administrative duties revolve around communication and audit. Audit is based on the Patient Analysis and Tracking System (PATS).
