Executive Director of Nursing and Care
Are you a national clinical leader, advocate and innovator in the field of digitally delivered healthcare and advice?
We are seeking a passionate and highly experienced candidate to provide digital health leadership and clinical leadership to all NHS 24 clinical and frontline staff providing care to the public.
This is an exciting time to join NHS 24. We are progressing a full digital transformation of work with a go live of October 2025. The Digital Transformation Programme has a significant impact on patients, particularly in terms of providing more channel choices across services and enabling seamless movement between channels without exiting the system. We will be more agile, connected, accessible and provide a collaborative omnichannel environment.
This Role -
As our Executive Director of Nursing and Care you will bring specialist focus on digital health to champion clinical ownership of the digital transformation agenda ensuring that there are positive outcomes for patients and practitioners through well designed, safe and effective digital and service transformation healthcare solutions.
As an NHS 24 Board and Executive Team member, you will fully contribute to and participate in the governance, strategic development, and corporate management of NHS 24 whilst providing professional clinical leadership, expertise and advice to the Board and the Executive Team.
The successful candidate will have -
1. Significant experience in a senior nursing management role within a complex healthcare environment.
2. Proven ability to lead clinical governance, manage clinical risk and drive continuous improvement in digital healthcare services.
3. Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively at local, regional and national levels.
4. A strong understanding of the NHS in Scotland, including policies and regulations relevant to the delivery of digital healthcare.
5. Strong leadership, influencing and change management skills, with a track record of leading people and teams across different disciplines and organisations and bringing them together to pursue a common goal (e.g. healthcare professionals, academia, third sector, local authorities etc.).
6. Ability to coach and influence others with a focus on creating digital leaders who can drive the business forward with a digital-first approach.

Who We Are
NHS 24 is uniquely placed within Scotland’s health and social care system. We provide a valued urgent care response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and we are an integral part of the national out-of-hours care system. We provide clinical assessment and referral, health advice and information by telephone to the people of Scotland through a network of contact centres and digitally through NHS Inform, NHS 24 online and other channels. NHS 24 plays a key role within the NHS system, acting as a customer/patient gateway to the NHS in Scotland. It also supports and facilitates the development of other digitally enabled services on an ongoing basis recognising the changing health and care needs of the people of Scotland.
We employ around 2,000 staff across six main contact centres and five remote and rural locations across Scotland. Our frontline services comprise a range of multi-disciplinary healthcare professionals from nursing and pharmacy to psychological wellbeing practitioners and call handlers that are supported by a range of corporate functions.
Where We Are
We have six regional centres – Aberdeen, Dundee, South Queensferry, Hillington, Cardonald and Clydebank. NHS 24 supports hybrid working. Please note the contractual base for this position is Cardonald. The successful candidate must be within commuting distance to a regional centre to attend if required and must also be able to travel to other regional centres when requested to attend meetings, undertake training and any other activities.
As NHS 24 is a national organisation there is an expectation that the post holder will work across Scotland when required. Aspects of the role can be delivered remotely; others may require travel across Scotland. A significant part of the role is to work closely with senior staff across NHS 24 and beyond while consistently demonstrating the NHS values.
