Purpose: The Materials Team are the stewards of raw material quality and performance at Millboard and hence have a huge responsibility to ensure all boards produced perform to the required standard. The team needs to put in place the right testing requirements and tools to ensure there are no quality/performance issues with boards that are manufactured at the Millboard Ryton site. Scope: The candidate must be able to demonstrate they are able to learn new tasks and testing techniques and communicate effectively to all levels. Reporting to the Material Specialist, the Junior Materials Specialist is required to check, assess, and monitor all raw material properties that can influence/affect the quality of boards manufactured at the Millboard Ryton Site and support New Product Introduction and performance improvement as required. Responsibilities: Support material research projects through continual material testing. Support material and/or process trials as required. Conduct regular material and board testing on batches which go through or are produced at the plant. Collect, process, and analyse laboratory data to highlight trends, patterns, or any anomalies. Support material or quality issues within the plant as required. Undertake problem solving with small teams to resolve issues. Conduct analytical investigations into Millboard products if a defect has been found. Ensure the laboratory housekeeping is maintained at the highest standard. Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by following site standards and procedures and ensuring the health & safety of all colleagues. Undertake any other duties as may be required by the Directors or your Manager. Person Specification : The competencies listed are appropriate to the Junior Materials Specialist and are an illustration of the qualities that the Company requires. Experienced Material testing Technician preferably with a recognised scientific qualification (e.g. Degree/HNC/HND) Experience of laboratory and production line environments and working with chemicals. Report and rectify all incidents and failures in relation to laboratory equipment, procedures, results and finished products. The individual should demonstrate fault finding & problem-solving abilities and be able to actively participate in problem solving and root cause analysis to resolve issues. Organising & performing all routine/non-routine Materials work & solving technical issues Producing & maintaining all relevant documents such as written reports and validation documents. Effectively liaising with Quality and Production departments on relevant raw material matters Ability to train test methods and procedures as appropriate. Demonstrate practical and technical knowledge in chemical handling and testing. Demonstrates practical and technical knowledge of using laboratory testing equipment ideally including FTIR, Karl Fischer, compressive strength test, humidity chambers, Binders, Shore A test equipment etc. Experience of using standard measuring equipment is essential. Good computer skills with working knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel) Good report writing skills. A good working knowledge of polyurethane production methods would be advantageous. High attention to detail Decisive thinker able to work within agreed timescales and use their initiative to complete tasks. Understands that nothing is so important it cannot be done safely.
