Key Roles & Responsibilities: 1. Design & Specification - Conduct thermal performance assessments for buildings, pipelines, boilers, and ductwork. - Select appropriate insulation materials (e.g., mineral wool, PIR foam, phenolic foam, aerogel) based on BS/EN/ISO standards. - Calculate required insulation thickness using industry methods (e.g., BS 5970, CIBSE guidelines). - Produce technical drawings and specifications using AutoCAD, Revit, or other design software. 2. Compliance & Standards - Ensure insulation systems meet UK Building Regulations (Part L – Conservation of Fuel & Power). - Follow industry standards (BS 5422, BS 5970, BS EN ISO 12241). - Comply with fire safety regulations (e.g., BS 476, Euroclass standards for fire performance). - Work with sustainability certifications (BREEAM, LEED, EPC requirements). 3. Project Management & Installation - Supervise insulation contractors, ensuring correct installation (cladding, vapour barriers, joint sealing). - Conduct site inspections and thermal imaging surveys to detect heat loss or defects. - Liaise with mechanical engineers, architects, and MEP teams to integrate insulation into designs. - Manage budgets, material procurement, and cost estimates for insulation projects. 4. Troubleshooting & Optimization - Diagnose issues like thermal bridging, condensation, or mould growth in existing insulation. - Recommend retrofitting solutions for energy efficiency improvements. - Perform U-value and R-value calculations to verify thermal performance. 5. Health & Safety - Follow UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines, including COSHH for insulation materials. - Ensure safe handling of hazardous materials (e.g., asbestos removal where applicable). - Conduct risk assessments for insulation work in confined spaces or high-temperature environments. 6. Documentation & Reporting - Prepare technical reports, thermal performance assessments, and energy-saving analyses. - Maintain records for compliance with UKCA/CE marking (post-Brexit product standards). - Assist in Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and SAP assessments for buildings. Qualifications & Skills Required: Essential: - Education: HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, or related field. - Experience: 3 years in thermal insulation (construction, HVAC, or industrial sectors). - Technical Knowledge: - Understanding of UK Building Regulations (Part L, Part B for fire safety). - Familiarity with BS/EN/ISO insulation standards. - Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or thermal modelling software (e.g., THERM, IES VE). - Certifications (Preferred): - CSCS Card (required for UK construction sites). - Asbestos Awareness (UKATA or IATP). - PASMA/IPAF (if working at heights). - Certified Thermographer (for thermal imaging surveys)
