Do you want to work in the great outdoors and maintain access to Staffordshire’s beautiful landscapes?
We are looking for an experienced maintenance person to join the Rights of Way Team to help deliver maintenance and construction works on our path network. The Rights of Way team oversees Staffordshire’s public rights of way – an impressive 4500km network of footpaths and bridleways - that plays an ever-increasing role in providing greener travel choices, support for local businesses and physical and mental health benefits for our communities.
In this role, you will help us to make sure the network is safe and accessible by attending to and making safe urgent safety issues and undertaking planned works such as bridge, signs and gates maintenance and replacement and vegetation clearance. This is a permanent role working outdoors, in public spaces and in all weathers and the post is subject to DBS and medical clearance.
As our service operates seven days a week, 365 days a year, your work pattern may vary according to business needs so you may be required to work on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Some evening work may also be necessary at certain times of the year. Please see the Job Description attached for more details.
Main Responsibilities
1. Deliver tasks to maintain the PROW network and resolve reported issues within required time scales and according to required procedures including installing notices as required for diversions, closures etc.
2. Be relied on to undertake works safely in line with procedures including operating tools, equipment, fleet and plant in a safely and appropriately and undertake training to maintain your qualifications, certificates and skills.
3. Undertake basic audits to check condition of routes, infrastructure and waymarking and pass issues requiring inspection / liaison to Rights of Way Officers.
4. Use IT equipment to add, record and update information via our Countryside Access Management System or other software systems.
5. Work with and supervise volunteers to support management of the network and engage with and build positive relationships with landowners.
The Ideal Candidate
You’ll have:
1. At least two of the following at entry and knowledge of others: NPTC Level 2 qualifications in chainsaw use & maintenance; strimming; mowing (pedestrian); brush cutters and trimmers; pesticides / spraying; off road driving; winching; tree safety management; ATV handling; digger driving; use of trailers; tractor driving and related operations; tractor mounted mowers; topper (rotary and flail).
2. First aid certificate or willingness to obtain.
3. Experience in countryside access, rights of way management, and practical access management.
4. Awareness of environmental, legislative issues, and health and safety procedures.
5. Excellent team working skills and ability to handle difficult situations and emergencies.
6. Current UK driving licence with off-road driving capability.
7. Physical fitness for outdoor work and experience engaging with the public and volunteers.
