We are looking for a dedicated Mental Health or Learning Disability Nurse to join us on our Kite Unit at the South of England Rehabilitation Centre (SERC).
The Kite unit is a ten-bed neuropsychiatric rehab service for adults following an acquired brain injury, whose impairments are largely in the cognitive, behavioural, or mental health spectrum, with the aim to enable patients to rebuild their lives after a brain injury. We are proud to have been accepted on the pathway towards accreditation with the Quality Network for Neuropsychiatry Services.
You will be responsible for meeting the needs of patients and their families to achieve improved health outcomes and promote health and wellbeing while demonstrating care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment. We are passionate about patient centred, culturally sensitive and evidence-based care which promotes independence.

Main duties of the job
* Assess patients, plan, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care and carry out nursing procedures.
* Provide direct nursing care for patients to achieve best health outcomes.
* Ensure use of nursing knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients' health needs as well as actively promote health and wellbeing.
* Contribute to effective discharge planning and referral processes.
* Manage care of patients on a day-to-day basis and, when required, manage care of all patients in the absence of senior colleagues.
* Accurately document assessments of patients' health status, diagnosis, and response to nursing and other interventions and treatments on the Trust Clinical Records System.
* Educate and provide information to patients to improve their recovery.
* Role model culturally safe nursing practice and report poor practice when observed.
* Practice in accordance with legal, ethical, culturally safe, and professional standards including the Code of practice.
* Act as a named nurse/key worker.
* Plan and coordinate complex healthcare packages that are responsive to individuals' changing healthcare needs.
* Be a Student Assessor, a Shift Coordinator, and supervise other staff.
* Accept, review, and audit Mental Health paperwork.
* Check rotas and send unfilled shifts to Bank in the absence of the Ward Manager.
* Attend meetings in the absence of the Ward Manager.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc Nursing or RN currently registered with NMC.
* Practice Assessor and Supervisor.
* Post registration, specialist training relevant to speciality.
* Teaching qualification e.g. ENB 998 or equivalent.
Experience
* Post-qualifying experience and evidence of completion of preceptorship.
* Ability to work legally in the UK.
* Ability to work with children and vulnerable adults.
* Experience in assessing and developing patient care plans and evaluating patients' conditions.
* Experience of MDT working and support development of others.
* Experience of teaching, training and supervision / assessing junior staff and students.
* Evidence of recent CPD.
* Experience of working with patients who have high levels of anxiety and aggression and patients who present with challenging behaviours and have complex needs.
* Clinically competent at Band 6 level.
* Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, ability to receive and provide complex information which may be sensitive, contentious, where persuasive negotiation may be required and there could be barriers to understanding.
* Evidence of experience and skills in managing and leading staff.
* Ability to work autonomously; prioritise workload, instruct and direct others, work is managed rather than supervised; works within clear code of practice.
* Problem solving and advocacy skills.
* Frequent requirement for physical effort manoeuvring patients and moving equipment.
* Frequent need to deal with managing emotional issues.
* Ability to adapt to change within work situation.
* Evidence of developing policy, guidelines contributing to management of resources.
* Dexterity required for intravenous and intramuscular injections, inserting catheters, removal of sutures and wound management.
Additional Criteria
* To work flexible duties as per rota, to meet patient and service need. To take part in the 24hr rota as required.
* The ability to implement restrictive manoeuvres, as required for PMVA training.
* Understanding of the health needs of people in their care and health promotion.
* Understanding of a range of clinical approaches.
* Articulate and knowledgeable of current professional nursing issues.
* To be able to demonstrate and understand the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion and how they apply to staff and patients in a healthcare setting. Able to demonstrate personal commitment to challenging discrimination and promoting equalities, at an appropriate level for the post.
