Class 2 HGV Mechanic

We are looking to recruit a Class 2 HGV Mechanic who will be responsible for the maintenance, servicing, and repair of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) up to Class 2 (rigid trucks over 3.5 tonnes). The role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, ensuring roadworthiness, and minimising vehicle downtime to maintain fleet efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Vehicle Maintenance & Repairs
o Perform routine inspections, servicing, and repairs on Class 2 HGVs.
o Diagnose and fix mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults.
o Replace worn or damaged components, including brakes, suspension, steering, and drivetrain systems.
o Conduct engine and transmission repairs as required.
2. Safety & Compliance
o Ensure all vehicles meet operator licensing regulations.
o Carry out MOT preparation and compliance checks.
o Perform safety inspections in line with legal and company standards.
3. Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
o Use diagnostic tools to identify faults in vehicle systems.
o Investigate breakdowns and determine the best repair solutions.
o Test repaired vehicles to ensure they are roadworthy.
4. Record-Keeping & Reporting
o Maintain accurate service records and job sheets.
o Report defects and potential issues to management.
o Assist in stock control of parts and consumables.
5. Workshop & Field Support
o Work both in the workshop and attend roadside breakdowns when necessary.
o Ensure tools and work areas are kept clean and organised.
o Support the training of junior mechanics when required.
Requirements & Qualifications
1. Education: NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair or equivalent.
2. Experience: Experience of working with HGVs, preferably Class 2 vehicles.
3. Technical Skills:
o Strong knowledge of HGV mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
o Ability to read technical manuals and wiring diagrams.
o Proficiency with diagnostic tools and software.
4. Licenses & Certifications:
o Class 2 HGV driving license (preferred but not essential).
o IRTEC or relevant mechanical certification (desirable).
5. Soft Skills:
o Strong problem-solving and attention to detail.
o Good teamwork and communication skills.
o Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Work Environment:
* Workshop-based with occasional roadside repairs.
* May involve shift work, weekends, and on-call duties.
* Requires manual handling and working in challenging conditions.
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: 46,000.00 per year
