The SRSG was one of the first RSE Groups set up in the UK and it is the base of operations for the campaign that helped recognise research software engineering across the world. As such, we can offer both a range of exciting projects within the University of Southampton and unparalleled opportunities to get involved with the national and international RSE community. We are growing significantly over the next few years to meet demand for our expertise, which offers the potential for a new recruit to advance their career as the SRSG grows. We also offer the opportunity to work with the Software Sustainability Institute, which is co-located with the SRSG. The Institute is the world-class authority on research software.
You will be working at first with PSDI, a new UK data infrastructure central to EPSRC’s digital research programme, which will provide you will the opportunity to contribute to shaping a nationally important initiative. PSDI serves a large range of subject areas from chemical engineering, through physics and chemistry, to the borders with life and environmental sciences. You will be part of a large team of RSE’s, data engineers, data curators, scientists and community engagement professionals working collaboratively across nationally recognised centres including STFC Scientific Computing, EPSRC National Research Facilities, Collaborative Computing Projects, the Digital Curation Centre, CCDC, Henry Royce Institute and the UK Catalysis Hub.
We particularly welcome applications from groups who are under-represented in the academic and RSE communities. We promote a healthy work life balance with generous holiday allowance (30+ days), flexitime and flexible working options including part time, hybrid on-site / remote working, access to onsite childcare facilities and our comprehensive benefits package also includes a contributory pension scheme, subsidised health and fitness facilities, a cycle-to-work scheme, and a range of discounts. For more information on our benefits, please visit our recruitment pages .
To be successful you can have either experience of working in research or an equivalent PhD. You will need a solid background in software development practices and good communication skills. A talent for technical problem solving is a must. You will come into contact with a wide range of technologies and will be given many opportunities to build new skills. We don’t expect you to be proficient in everything, but it is vital that you enjoy learning new technologies. There will be many opportunities to develop skills that will advance your career by learning from leading RSEs, and to build on skills outside of software development, such as in project management and consultancy.
The position will be a two-year, fixed-term contract in the first instance, but will be expected to continue for much longer dependent on funding. The post is based at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
