The Role
This role will involve interacting with transport staff in the Wellbeing Services department, identifying and discussing patient transport requirements for each day. You will also be collecting patients from their own homes and transporting them safely to and from the Wellbeing Programme.
Availability: Weekdays – especially Mondays and Fridays, but Tue-Thurs will also be helpful.
Frequency: minimum of 1 day per week.
What will I be doing?
Role tasks:
1. Liaise with the Wellbeing Coordinator and Transport Driver to identify patients and carers that require transport each day.
2. Using either your own or a Hospice vehicle to collect patients and carers from their homes and transport them to attend the Wellbeing Programme, at St Michael’s Hospice or Rye Hub.
3. Guiding patients and carers into and out of the vehicle in a safe and courteous manner.
4. Liaising between patients and Wellbeing Coordinator to determine timings for support requirements.
5. Transporting patients and carers home after their visit to the Hospice.
6. Liaising with the Wellbeing Coordinator regarding any additional duties required.
7. Ensure that the role is performed in accordance with the Hospice’s infection prevention policy.
Skills and Experience Required:
1. Must possess a full clean driving licence (minimum 3 years post-test experience).
2. Vehicle owner, with valid excise licence and MOT.
3. Must be able to provide valid insurance and service records for own vehicle if used.
4. A relatively good level of personal fitness, as this is an active role.
5. Good teamworking and communication skills, as you will be part of a larger interdisciplinary team.
Personal Qualities Required:
1. Calm and friendly, with the ability to put patients and carers at ease.
2. Flexibility in response to requirements for pick-up and transportation.
3. A sensitivity towards the Hospice environment.
4. An awareness of the importance of safeguarding in relation to both self and others.
This role requires some training which will take place online.
*We anticipate that this learning will take between three and four hours depending on your level of experience in using online platforms. Support is available if you do not have access to a computer at home, or would like assistance in completing the training. Please contact Voluntary Services for more information.
Mandatory:
1. Volunteer Welcome Session.
2. Patient Driver Assessment Drivers documents check (inc insurance if driving own vehicle).
3. ROSPA handbook Role Induction (including role-specific H&S, Lone working and Infection Prevention measures).
ID Badge Departmental support:
Day to day support will be provided by the Wellbeing Co-Ordinator or Transport Driver.
DBS:
Volunteer will be providing a regulated activity by transporting adult patients to and from a healthcare setting. An Enhanced DBS check with Adult Barring will be required.
