We are looking to recruit a full time locum Consultant Gastroenterologist with subspecialty interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease to cover a period of absence for 6 months. The successful candidate will provide out-patient clinics and endoscopy lists independently, and may be required to supervise junior doctors in the out-patient clinic. The candidate will be fully JAG accredited in gastroscopy and colonoscopy and will be able to provide evidence of independent practice with KPIs that fulfill JAG standards. They will also be able to provide evidence of independent practice in the out-patient setting managing general gastroenterology and hepatology patients. Clinics and endoscopy lists run from 08:30-12:30 and 13:30-17:00 across all three Trust sites (Watford General, Hemel Hempstead Hospital, St Albans City Hospital). This post has 10 programmed activities. There is a 1:12 on-call rota for 'consultant of the week' inpatient cover and a 1:12 overnight on-call for GI bleed. We are looking for the prospective candidate to start on 11/08/2025.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the smooth running, governance, and further development of the IBD service including:
1. Independent care of patients with complex IBD
2. Actively lead and contribute to IBD-MDTs
3. Support and training of the IBD nurses
4. Foster close teamworking within the IBD team
5. Support networking with internal and external providers
6. Implement national policies and guidance and local GIRFT recommendations relating to IBD care
7. Support IBD data collection/audit and database
8. Develop departmental IBD research portfolio
9. Maintain appropriate CPD
10. Endoscopy (Elective, training, and inpatient emergency)
11. Outpatient work (clinics, referral vetting, GP advice and guidance)
12. Inpatient work (Consultant of the week to cover GI ward, Ward referrals, ED in-reach)
13. Weekend work (6 hours on site ward and emergency endoscopy)
You will be expected to be able to travel to all 3 Trust hospital sites (Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital, and St Albans Hospital). You will take part in clinical governance and clinical risk management, and in their implementation, including audit. A personal discussion and visit to the department are strongly encouraged.
