The current opportunity is available for current Manchester Met students; to apply, you must be based in the UK for the duration of the role. The Research Assistantship is an appointment under the supervision of a regular faculty member (Dr. Chris McCarthy) conducting a research project. The Research Assistant (RA) is responsible for assisting the faculty member in a variety of non-administrative tasks which may include preparing resources, equipment, and materials for the research, documenting results, etc., in support of the research activities. Research projects should ideally lead to a thesis or publication that will support the career development of the student. The research project is intended to provide the opportunity to learn research procedures and techniques. The supervising faculty is responsible for providing ongoing feedback and a formal assessment at the conclusion of the assistantship. The project the RA will be working on is a study funded by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) that aims to survey the CSP membership establishing the levels and areas of understanding of research methodologies in clinical research. The CSP has several research priorities that, in order to address, require understanding and experience in various research methodologies. There may be gaps in methodological understanding within the profession, making addressing these priorities difficult. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Chris McCarthy (Clinical Lead of the Manchester Movement Unit, Faculty of Health and Education) with collaboration from a number of Physiotherapy colleagues from the Executive Committee of the Physiotherapy Research Society (a professional network of the CSP). The Research Principal (Dr. McCarthy) determines the research goals to assist in the preparation for and achievement of the research goals which may include the following and/or other duties specific to the research objectives:
* Research and collect data through survey techniques and procedures, library research, structured interviews, or other project-specific methodology.
* Coordinate the planning and running of a national survey of CSP members online.
* Coordinate regular project steering group meetings with colleagues.
* Interpret, synthesize, and analyze survey data.
* Schedule, organize, and report on the status of research activities for the CSP and others.
* Plan survey techniques, procedures, and data management.
* Write and edit materials for publication and presentation.
* Meet with faculty supervisor on a regular basis to maintain ongoing communication regarding the quality of the assistant's performance.
* Perform other related duties as required.
The Research Assistant will work on dedicated tasks. These include conducting literature reviews on the understanding of clinical research methodologies by allied health care professionals/nurses/physiotherapists. The RA will be required to support the Principal Investigator (PI) in developing the survey methodology to investigate the areas and levels of understanding in clinical research methodologies. The RA will work online and have regular face-to-face meetings with the PI (Dr. McCarthy) onsite. Supervision will be provided by Dr. Chris McCarthy, envisaged to be on a bi-weekly basis, or as required. Manchester Metropolitan University is committed to supporting the rights, responsibilities, dignity, health, and wellbeing of staff and students through our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
