Job Description
Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust seeks to appoint a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join its dynamic and exciting team.
The successful candidate will join a large consultant team providing general and specialised obstetrics and gynaecology services to the population of East Hampshire and neighbouring areas. The post will be based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. The job plan will initially be based on ten programmed activities and will include participation in the obstetrics and gynaecology on-call rotas.
About us
The Obstetrics and Gynaecological Department is part of the Women and Children’s Clinical Service Centre and is based at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The maternity service has 88 beds and will be responsible for approximately 6000 deliveries in 2024. There are four Midwife led birth centres in the district, one of which is co-located with the Consultant Unit. We have close links with the regional Fetal Medicine Centre in Southampton.
Additionally the Gynaecology Department sees approximately 6500 new patients per year and performs over 3000 elective procedures. There is a 12 bed Gynaecological Inpatient Unit, Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Gynae Emergency Assessment Unit. We share day unit facilities with other specialities. There are sub speciality units of Gynaecological Oncology and Urogynaecology, and accredited Colposcopy and Endometriosis centres.
The Consultant clinical duties:
The direct clinical care will include Diabetic antenatal clinic, elective caesarean section list, general antenatal clinic, general gynaecology clinic, gynaecology theatre list and ward cover. Each consultant also participates in the Hot Week rota on average 5 times a year when normal daytime elective activity is cancelled to allow for covering the Labour Ward or Gynaecology Emergency Unit.
On call requirements
The post holder will be required to participate in the obstetric and gynaecology on call rotas including resident on call until 10pm week days and six hours resident on Saturdays and Sundays when covering obstetrics and weekday nights from home when covering gynaecology.

Qualifications
Essential
* Full GMC registration
* On the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of receiving CCT (or equivalent), in O&G
* MRCOG or equivalent approved by PMETB
* Completion of RCOG ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice or equivalent
Desirable
* Completion of RCOG ATSM in Maternal Medicine or equivalent
Clinical Experience
* Clinical training and experience in obstetrics and gynaecology equivalent to the required for a UK CCT
* Proven experience in maternal medicine and diabetic care in pregnancy
* Ability to offer acute care as the Obstetric consultant alongside a Level 3 Neonatal Unit
* Demonstrable team working skills
Clinical Skills
* Knowledge, Clinical and Technical skills to provide a Consultant Service in obstetrics and gynaecology
* Certification in managing obstetric emergencies on labour ward
Knowledge
* Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of a safe service
* Commitment to accept a share of management in the Department
