New Artist Commission with Fife African and Caribbean Network
Closing date: 7 February 2025
Fife Contemporary is excited to announce a new commission opportunity for artist designer-makers.
We are collaborating with Fife African and Caribbean Network (FACN) to commission a new artwork. We invite proposals from artists and makers who can design and build a two-person seat or bench. FACN proposes that the bench should provide the opportunity for a safe space for two people to ask questions about one another’s culture and background and be a place that invites you to ask any questions you might feel are otherwise difficult to ask or be asked of you.
FACN is an informal membership organisation of people of African and Caribbean heritage who live in Fife. The group would like the bench to act as a path to belonging, not only to Fifers who are African and Caribbean, but to bring people together Fife-wide through an increased sense of community and understanding. Finding out about each other and different experiences and cultures is a positive way to connect and break down barriers, and FACN is looking for a bench that will celebrate this.
The deadline for applications is Friday 7th February 2025. The bench will be launched at a celebratory event at Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy on 17th May 2025, and then tour to schools, libraries, and community spaces across Fife during 2025 and 2026.
This project has been designed and proposed by members of FACN and is being facilitated by Fife Contemporary. The selection panel for this commission will be majority FACN network members.
