EPR Clinical Specialist (Pharmacy), Band 7 (24 hours a week)
Gloucestershire Hospitals Digital Team are recruiting an EPR (Electronic Patient Record) Pharmacy Specialist to join our forward thinking and innovative EPR Design and Configuration Teams.
Over the last 5 years, this trust has delivered an ambitious programme of work to implement an Electronic Patient Record, in a phased approach across 2 large general hospitals and a number of smaller community and satellite sites. Following the successful roll-out of electronic prescribing in 2022 and our Scan4Safety functionality in 2024, we are looking for a dedicated EPR Pharmacy Specialist to join us and take a lead roll in maintaining and optimising the system across all of our sites.
Ideal candidates will have a passion for digital systems and their use in a healthcare setting as well as the ability to listen, analyse and solve problems for staff across the organisation and aid them in delivering the best possible care for their patients. Main duties of the job
The role of the EPR Pharmacy Specialist will be pivotal in delivering and maintaining all aspects of pharmacy related functionality within our chosen Electronic Patient Record (EPR), Sunrise. This includes, but is not limited to, leading on engagement and delivery of the next phase of deployment to paediatric and outpatient areas of the Trust.
The role will play a leading part in the development, support and maintenance of the EPR (and EPR-related) medication databases and dictionaries, providing professional leadership and direction to the EPR team in pharmacy related developments including being a key member of the team designing and building the system, developing policy and procedure to ensure safe medication practice within the EPR, and being the main point of contact between pharmacy teams and digital teams in delivery of new functionality.
Working with staff at all levels across the Trust, the role will ensure the safe and reliable delivery and continuous improvement of our Sunrise EPR with regards to medication prescribing, administration, and maintenance.

The EPR configuration team consists of around 20 members of staff, supported by over 200 more digital staff across various departments, from health record management, to business intelligence. This role will work directly with the EPR configuration team to deliver our programme of work, while also liaising with the wider digital team, as well as clinical and administrative staff across the organisation.

- To undertake analysis of current workflow and future designs as part of process redesign
- To communicate in complicated and difficult situations and to explain medicines prescribing and administration system issues to non IM& T staff/suppliers.
- To establish working relationships with the key clinicians and support staff representing the clinical areas engaged in EPR use.
- Demonstrate system functionality to stakeholders and lead on User Acceptance Testing (UAT) by working with service managers to analyse and test newly defined processes using the EPR test environments.
- To act as an interface and point of contact between pharmacy and the EPR team and to liaise with clinical pharmacy practitioners to identify how best EPR services can be utilised to meet patient needs and manage risk.
- In conjunction with the EPR senior team plan the Electronic Prescribing project and subsequent phases, ensuring clinical and non-clinical areas have been evaluated.
- Plan the smooth running of sub-project teams in the delivery of elements of new functionality and system testing.
- Participate in the planning and delivery of workshops, demonstrations, configuration sessions and training as part of the delivery of EPR initiatives.
- Collate and document detailed background information from clinical areas by engaging with staff and observing work patterns/processes.
- Ensure the system is designed to provide an efficient way of working for prescribers and non-prescribers and data is collected and analysed to identify areas of improvement.
- Support and aid the development of policies on electronic prescribing medicines administration and recording in line with the EPR team.
- Be responsible for identifying areas that require development and sharing with the supplier to be able to influence the product development roadmap.
- Design and delivers specialist training/advice on the EPR system to EPR team members, clinical and non-clinical staff and external organisations.
