Overview
We are looking for a Plasma Diagnostician to manage the operation, maintenance, calibration, and experimental data analysis activities of diagnostics for ST40 spherical tokamak. The role will further include the design, procurement, technical development, and implementation of future diagnostics to be deployed on ST40 or next generation spherical tokamaks. The candidate will ensure that instrument design is complete to meet the functional, safety and quality requirements as specified by the project.
Responsibilities
* Take ownership of the technical development of assigned diagnostic systems, data acquisition and analysis. This includes, but is not limited to, tasks such as electrical circuit design, FPGA programming, and related activities.
* In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead and refine various diagnostic systems, such as bolometry, which are essential for measuring the power emitted by the ST40 plasma.
* Contribute to the design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of assigned instrument for diagnostic systems,
* Take part in experimental campaigns ensuring assigned diagnostics are available and operating correctly, acting as primary point of contact for certain diagnostic instruments.
* Take responsibility for regular calibration and updates to the calibration data for assigned systems,
* Perform analysis of the operational and/or experimental data delivered by the assigned diagnostic instruments,
* Be required to work regularly with Diagnostics team members and interact with others in the wider Tokamak Science directorate as well as the Design Office, multi-skilled technicians, software engineers and other functional teams to facilitate any of the activities above,
* Be required to contribute to other projects within the diagnostics and data team, particularly contributing to diagnostics such as bolometer, neutronics system, ion detectors and perform other duties relevant to company milestones upon management request,
* Be required to contribute to the design of diagnostics instruments for future, next-generation tokamak devices.
Requirements
* A PhD degree or degree (with experience) in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related disciplines,
* Knowledge of plasma/nuclear detectors,
* Ability to develop and modify the data acquisition systems e.g., FPGAs are highly desired,
* Programming skills
* Experience designing, analysing, and assembling analogue/digital electronics boards,
* Ability to work on own initiative or in a team and multi-cultural environment,
* Excellent planning and organisational skills.
Desirable
* Experience in experimental scenario development and/or scenario modelling.
* Familiarity with software development best practices and the V-model.
* Ability to work in a Linux environment.
* Experimental data analysis experience.
* Experience with speed optimising code.
* Experience in one extra programming languages on the top from the “Essential list” Python, C/C++, FORTRAN, MATLAB/Simulink.
* Willingness to develop existing and new collaborations.
* Track record of scientific publications

This job includes the following hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening through our occupational health service before the successful candidate will be allowed to start work:
* Working at height (ladders & scaffolding),
* Occasional driving on Company business,
* Working with ionising radiation (Occasional use of calibration sources)
* Regular manual handling,
* Working with electricity (LV only),
* Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields,
* Working with materials that are managed under the control of substances hazardous to health regulations (COSHH).
