The role
An exciting opportunity for an analytical fish health enthusiast to join the Fish Health team in the role of Technical Officer. This key position will deliver operational, technical, and administrative support for fish health related tasks and projects.
Based primarily at our Hideaway Bay site near Dover, this role will require travel between sites to ensure the effective implementation and ongoing review of Huon’s Veterinary Health Plan, which encompasses fish health, biosecurity, and animal welfare.
You will:
* Assist in the development and execution of fish health assessments, disease investigations, and the preparation of veterinary health certificates (e.g., for smolt or hatchery transfers).
* Conduct sampling and investigations at hatchery and marine sites following mortality events or unusual fish behaviour as requested by fish health staff.
* Ensure compliance with animal welfare standards across all farming operations, reporting any non-compliance and promoting humane treatment of animals.
* Collaborate with leadership to implement Huon’s Veterinary Health Plan, including protocols for fish health, biosecurity, and animal welfare, while supporting training and reporting.
* Contribute to research initiatives, assist with reporting and analysis of company projects, and manage delegated projects to ensure timely and efficient execution.
About you
* Strong knowledge of fish biology, water chemistry, and production cycles in both marine and freshwater environments.
* Coxswain certification (or equivalent) and/or practical experience in boat operations is desirable.
* Proven experience in data collection, analysis, and reporting, with the ability to interpret and present findings clearly to support decision-making and project outcomes.
* A proactive and reliable team player who demonstrates a strong work ethic, consistently contributing to a positive and collaborative work environment with a focus on shared goals.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams).
